Important facts about Subterranean Termites Termites in Qld There are about 20 species of subterranean termites which commonly attack timber- in- service throughout Australia and 10 of these can be found in QLD. So prevention, to keep termites out, to protect buildings especially our homes, is a major concern for most Australian home owner especially if you are the owner of a residence which was previously constructed before the year Significant financial devastation The annual cost of termite damage to buildings in Australia is not known, but estimates exceed $100million. Whatever the real figures, termites can cause significant damage with devastating financial and social implications. Qld statistics also show that 1 in 3 houses will suffer from termite damage. A Home insurance policy does not usually cover termite damage. Termites are one of the most destructive pests to man. Colonies Termites are social insects, working and living together in groups (colonies). There are specialised tasks to perform by each type of termite and some mature colonies may number up to 2 million individuals. Some subterranean termite queens are capable of producing 2000 eggs per day. Termite colonies may exist for as long as 50 years. Subterranean termites feed exclusively on wood and wood products containing cellulose. Termites often infest buildings and damage lumber, wood panels, flooring, gyprock, wallpaper, plastics, paper products and fabric made of plant fibre s. The most serious damage is the loss of structural strength. Other costly losses include attacks on flooring, carpeting, art work, books, clothing, furniture and valuable papers. Common species Subterranean termites species which make tunnels in the ground. They are capable of travelling up to metres underground in search of a food source. 7 Visual Subterranean termite inspections Post construction as Inspection Termite damage is costly to repair & also can be structurally damaging. Termite eradication if needed usually requires some form of chemical treatment. A good inspection will show you how to be aware of the risks your property may face. Then to act in a preventative way, & if needed protect your residence in the future ahead. Australian Standard recommends 12 monthly inspections as a minimum so that termite problems are smaller rather than bigger. It is more manageable if the residence & property is inspected regularly so that the home owner can have peace of mind. From experience however significant termite damage (depending on species) can occur in less than 3 months. Wood Inspector A subterranean termite inspection should be conducted by a qualified, licensed & competent wood inspector, knowledgeable on local building practices, biology & ecology of termites. With sufficient field experience. Reporting Our clients receive a thorough inspection of both residence & property involving A written report which is easily read & concise Detailed information relating to building construction & design. Termite identification Possible inspection limitations Outcome & findings Summary of findings Recommendations Treatment proposal Brisbane Termite Services also uses the latest in termite detection devices when conducting a termite inspection. Termatrac Device Thermal Image Camera Boroscopes Moisture meter Recommendations Regular inspections will not prevent termite attack however early detection will allow remedial treatment & damage to be minimilized.

Termite Treatments Eradication Chemical barriers The headings are linked to the information on the following pages Replenishment systems Monitoring

Termite Treatments Eradication Eradication treatments can be conducted to alleviate particular infestations & are usually conducted prior to the installation of a termite barrier. Eradication treatments alone can not be considered as long term protection. Methods can include the use of Termidor dust which is applied directly onto termites & their workings, this dust is then transferred back to their nest. Direct application of Termidor foam is another method of eradication which works in similar fashion to that of the dust. Following a successful eradication treatment a termite perimeter barrier is then recommended. Areas located in garden areas within trees or fences can be successfully treated by using a liquid termiticide or direct application as described above. Chemical barriers Chemical soil barriers will help prevent termites from gaining access into your home. They are usually associated with slab on ground constructions & are applied around the perimeter of the building. The placement of a full chemical termite barrier to each residence as per the Australian Standard (AS3660.2) specifies the procedures to be followed to provide a chemical soil barrier which will impede termites from gaining access to the termite susceptible members in the building. Section 8 does not refer to any specific chemical; instead it will allow any chemical that is registered by The National Registration Authority for Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals to be used. The life expectancy of all chemicals used in Termite Management vary, careful consideration should be given to the chemical used in this treatment. Once the chemical barrier is installed an on-going maintenance program is strongly suggested. Inspections are recommended at intervals not exceeding 12 months. Costing for the installation of a chemical barrier is estimated by the lineal metre age of the particular building perimeter. The design of each & every residence varies & therefore individual quotations are needed to ascertain costs. Brisbane Termite Services uses & recommends Termidor.

Termite Treatments Replenishment system Termx is a specially designed pipe system used to apply termiticide chemical under pressure to saturate the soil. Placement of the Termx replenishment system can be positioned around or underneath and existing structure and or dwelling,. It is designed to deliver chemical as a preventative measure. Once installed the system allows for quick application of a treatment by means of charging. Recommendations for how often the system needs to be charged with chemical is dependant on the type of chemical used and the soil conditions. Monitoring As the name depicts Sentricon Monitoring Stations are a relatively new technology which monitors termite activity only. The strategic placement of a selected amount of baiting stations around the perimeter of your home or building is recommended so as to provide a window into the world of a termite colony. Easily installed in ground with only the lid discreetly visible the Sentricon Station is filled with a monitoring device (blocks of wood or a similar product which attracts termites.) It is recommended that these devices should be inspected for termite activity every 2-3 months. If & when termite activity is located within the in ground stations they are then filled with a termite block bait called Sentrican IG Termite Bait. This bait is designed to eliminate termites once enough bait is digested to eventually lead back to the nest.

Technology Termatrac Thermal Image Camera Boroscope

Technology Termatrac Termatrac is a breakthrough development in the detection of termites, invented & developed in Australia using technology similar to radar. The Termatrac can Pick up termite movement Track the movement of termites Can help determine entry points Brisbane Termite Services uses the Termatrac device during every inspection it conducts. This technology is considered a crucial instrument used for termite detection which is non invasive with accurate findings. We do not inspect without one.

Technology Thermal Image Camera Is a non invasive means of detection. As the name suggests thermal Images are displayed on screen showing different infrared heat signatures which termites can leave, usually in the form of subnests within wall & roof cavities. This can be an additional means of confirmation used in conjunction with the Termatrac device. Boroscope Boroscope is another tool which can be used to ascertain activity & damage inside walls & cavities, minimilising disturbance to termites. A small hole is placed in the wall & the boroscope is placed through this hole showing possibly activity & also damage within this area.
