2 Trimethylolethane CH 2 OH CH 3 C CH 2 OH CH 2 OH CAS Registry No EINECS Registry No Introduction TRIMET TME Trimethylolethane, manufactured by GEO Specialty Chemicals Inc., is a polyol useful in the preparation of alkyd resins. This bulletin compares a water-soluble resin based on TME with a similar resin based on glycerol. Such resins are appropriate for a wide range of industrial coatings, including implement coatings. TME is the polyol of preference over glycerol for the formulation of fast air drying, water-soluble resins. The TME-based resin affords a faster cure, lower colour and water reducibility. The resultant resins are chemically analogous to the short oil alkyd resins traditionally used in implement enamel. They are expected to offer similar good weathering properties and, with proper modifications, good resistance to water. Resin Formulation TME is an excellent polyol for use in the manufacture of fast air drying, water-soluble resins. The basic resin chosen for this study can be modified with different fatty acids depending on cost, availability, and the degree of whiteness retention desired. Although acid functionality is necessary for water solubility, excessive acidity in the finished resin can be a cause of water resistance problems. To obtain optimal properties, it is necessary that the resin be processed to a specific endpoint. The basic resin formulation is shown in Table 1. Enamel Formulations White enamels were prepared, applied to Bondrite 1000 panels and allowed to air dry prior to testing. In all cases, naphthenate driers were employed. The enamel based on the TME resin showed faster drying and improved gloss retention, adhesion, hardness and flexibility. For those applications which call for additional whiteness retention and impact resistance, along with improved weathering and salt spray resistance, it is recommended that a chelate dryer system and a hard resin be incorporated. The choice of enamel formulation for a particular application will of course depend on the requirements of the specific end use. In general, implement enamels require a fast dry, water resistance and good weatherability. Many less demanding industrial applications will find basic unmodified formulations to be of utility. 2
