P POLYMERIC FLAME RETARDANT FOR TEXTILE FINISHING

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION AND ADVANTAGES P is a wash durable water-based brominated acrylate copolymer with the following properties: Chemically bound bromine within an acrylic copolymer dispersion Inherent FR properties Flexible film forming Homogeneous system Effective flame suppression on a variety of fabrics Supplied as an aqueous emulsion with up to 50% solids Self binding; no additional binder needed Excellent transparency Compatibility with most textile finishing chemicals Good ph stability Ability to achieve FR cotton/polyester fabrics durable up to 50 laundry cycles Sustainability and Durability These unique properties of P make it an environmentally acceptable, fully polymerized, non-leaching bromine system. The homogenous system enables long shelf life and easy product management. Additionally, the flexible system opens new opportunities for uncomplicated water based FR treatment of cotton/polyester and 100% polyester fabrics. 2

Flexibility One of the most important benefits of using P is a consequence of its acrylate structure. Like most water borne acrylates/latexes, it is easy to handle and dilute and may be adjusted for different foaming, hydrophobic/hydrophilic, adhesion properties, etc. P may be used by various application techniques including spray, pad, print, coat, foam and brush. It is most suitable for 100% polyester and cotton/polyester blend fabrics. P is highly compatible with most common textile formulation additives such as: cross-linkers, softeners, antimony trioxide (ATO), pigment dispersions, etc. 3

PROPERTIES The main properties of P are summarized below. It is suitable for durable textile coating applications, especially to pass stringent standards such as BS-5852, NFPA- 701 and 16 CFR Properties of P Dispersions Grade %Br %Solid Viscosity* cps ph P up to P up to * Further viscosity adjustment is possible according to end-use formulation. P copolymer should be handled in a similar manner to acrylic emulsions, e.g. protected from freezing and stored in airtight containers. APPLICATION EXAMPLES P can be formulated according to the following examples. Typical Weight % P Coating Formulations Weight% P40 dispersion 62.3 P45 dispersion 82.0 Antimony trioxide 7.2 Antimony trioxide 9.5 Water 27.5 Water 4.6 Miscellaneous 3.0 Miscellaneous 3.9 4

The various dispersions are prepared by the following procedure: 1. Calculate the amount of water needed, in addition to the water already present in the P dispersion as supplied, to achieve the desired final dilution (solids content) in the coating formulation % of the water required for the final dilution in the formulation and a dispersing agent are added to pre-stirred P dispersion. Antimony oxide is then added slowly with stirring. The resulting mixture is stirred with a mixer (500 rpm) for 15 minutes. 3. Slow addition of the rest of the water and ph correction if desired. 4. Addition of other additives as desired (such as thickener, pigment, etc.) to complete the latex formulation. The viscosity is adjusted to the higher range for fabric backcoating by common thickeners used in this field. PADDING APPLICATION The type of P required and add-on is directly related to the properties of the fabric treated, for example: Fabric composition and construction Specific area weight/thickness Fabric end-use Flammability test required to pass Hand of fabric Following are the properties of the fabrics used in the application examples. 5

HEALTH SAFETY - ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS Brominated FR s (BFR s) in general and ICL Industrial Products FR product line in particular, make a positive contribution to the environment by avoiding fires and their uncontrolled emissions of toxic gases and effluents. When BFR s are associated with high performance recycling operations, their end of life fate can be managed and controlled as shown in many concrete cases. ICL Industrial Products Flame Retardant product line has undergone and is undergoing extensive toxicological and environmental testing 1 as part of an ongoing Product Stewardship Program and Customer oriented policy. Results of an analyses performed by Institut Fresenius Chemische und Biologische Laboratorien GmbH on all the FR s mentioned above for the presence of polybrominated dibenzo-para-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PBDD/PBDF) have shown them to be in full compliance with the strictest requirements of the global criteria of the German Dioxin Ordinance and EPA TSCA Final Rule requirements 1. As part of an ongoing Product Stewardship Program and Customer oriented policy, ICL Industrial Products is committed to implement further toxicological and environmental tests as needed. As a proactive action to avoid contamination of effluent by chemicals used in the coating process, ICL Industrial Products has carried out work together with the Brominated Science and Environmental Forum (BSEF) and European Brominated Flame Retardant Industry Panel (EBFRIP).
