PRESS INFORMATION On Sale in Europe, Parts of the Near and Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific Small Intestinal Capsule Endoscope for Observation with Higher Image Quality *1 Hamburg, 21 March 2013 Olympus Medical Systems Corp. (Senior Executive Managing Officer Akihiro Taguchi) will start sales in early February 2013 of its ENDOCAPSULE 10 System, a small intestinal capsule endoscope for observation with higher image quality. It will be available in Europe, parts of the Near and Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific once regulatory compliance is achieved. Since starting sales of small intestinal capsule endoscopes in Europe in 2005, we have extended sales of these products worldwide. The newlylaunched small intestinal capsule endoscope, ENDOCAPSULE 10 System provides higher image quality than previous products *2, supporting more accurate diagnosis. New automated review modes will help decrease observation time and workload for medical diagnosis. *1 See next page for a summary of capsule endoscope examinations *2 OLYMPUS CAPSULE ENDOSCOPE SYSTEM Summary of the launched products Main components ENDOCAPSULE SMALL INTESTINAL CAPSULE ENDOSCOPE SET MAJ-2027 ENDOCAPSULE RECORDER SET *3 MAJ-2029 ENDOCAPSULE SOFTWARE 10 SERVER-CLIENT*4 MAJ-2038 Scheduled Launch Date 2013 Early February *3 Including recorder, antenna unit, battery pack, cradle, holder (for the recorder), holder (for the antenna unit), and starter. *4 Software for observing images, creating reports and managing examination data 1

Recorder Example of wearing the recorder and antenna unit Background to the Launch Since we developed the world s first gastro camera in 1950, Olympus has developed and manufactured a broad lineup of endoscopes and other devices for use in the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and other digestive organs. In the field of diagnosis and treatment of patients with diseases of the small intestine, we have developed the small intestinal fiberscope in 1973, the small intestinal videoscopes from 1997, the single balloon enteroscope system from 2007, and a range of other devices. We have been researching micromachining technology and related fields since 2

the start of the 90s, yielding advanced technologies. In October 2005 we launched, in Europe and various other countries, our first capsule endoscope for the small intestine, where endoscope insertion has been difficult. Olympus capsule endoscope is now sold on a worldwide basis. Since starting sales of small intestinal capsule endoscopes in 2005, we have gathered many opinions and ideas for improvements, which are reflected in the newest capsule endoscope generation. ENDOCAPSULE 10 System reflects our vast experience in opto-digital technology for endoscopes. This small-intestine endoscope system produces extremely high-quality images supporting minimally invasive diagnosis of small intestinal diseases which were difficult to observe with other diagnostic equipment. What happens in a small intestinal capsule endoscope examination? The patient swallows a capsule the size of a large tablet, equipped with a small camera and illumination, and it images the whole small intestine in an examination that places little burden on the patient. While the capsule is moved by the peristaltic action of the gastrointestinal tract, it takes two pictures per second, which amounts to approximately 60,000 images in the course of an examination of around eight hours. The acquired images are transmitted wirelessly from the capsule to the antenna unit worn by the patient, and stored sequentially in the recorder. Once image acquisition is complete, the physician downloads image data from the recorder to a PC and views the images to make a diagnosis. 3

Main Features 1. Supports more accurate diagnosis with a high-quality imaging sensor and wider viewing angle Advanced OLYMPUS optical technology delivers high-quality images that reveal individual villi with superb clarity. Noise has been markedly reduced along with halation *5, optimizing brightness levels for detailed observation of small intestine mucosa and identification of abnormalities. The clear visual information facilitates highly accurate diagnosis. Battery life has been extended from eight hours to twelve hours to considerably increase the ratio of completed small intestine observations. The long observation time maximizes the detection rate of lesions for more reliable diagnosis. 2. Equipped with new review functions and 3D Track function to make medical analysis more efficient ENDOCAPSULE 10 System software facilitates reading with a variety of unique functions to detect images requiring closer inspection, providing the means for quick review of results to ultimately speed diagnosis. For example, there is a function to play a succession of similar images or images showing bubbles or residues at fast speed to shorten the observation time. If there are images which could show diseases with major changes, such as bleeding points, the review speed automatically slows down to facilitate image diagnosis. A high-precision antenna recognizes the detailed signals from the capsule, allowing the system to display the capsule track in 3D. The 3D Track 4

function operates intuitively, showing capsule location to help you decide what approach should be taken for subsequent procedures. 3. Improved Recorder set enhances patient comfort and ease of use Considering the needs of medical personnel and patients, ENDOCAPSULE 10 System is designed for optimal clinical performance as well as outstanding easeof-use and mobility. The all-in-one recorder and belt-style antenna simplify procedures, making for a smooth and relaxed examination environment. Personalized instructions for each patient can be displayed on the recorder by registering data. The messages direct patient activity, such as eating, drinking water and returning to the hospital. Making it easy for patients to follow correct procedures helps you conduct safer, more accurate examinations. *5 The phenomenon by which areas exposed to strong light become blurred with white.
