10 FAQ s What is Bioremediation? Natural beneficial microorganisms used to breakdown environmental pollutants from soil, water and gases to non toxic substances What is Bioclean STP? Bioclean STP is a consortium of beneficial soil microbes which are natural and safe. They have the ability to degrade number of pollutants. The biological system is designed in such a way that it can be used for very tough to biodegrade wastewater. Each gram of Bioclean STP may contain up to 96 different strains of bacteria. All the bacteria present in Bioclean STP are highly stable.

11 FAQ s How does it work? Bacteria need nutrients (such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphate, and trace metals) to survive. They break down organic (carboncontaining) compounds found in nature or man made to get energy for growth. For example, some bacteria use petroleum hydrocarbons as a food and energy source changing them into harmless substances of carbon dioxide, water and fatty acids.

12 FAQ s Are bacteria present in Bioclean STP genetically engineered? NO. They are not genetically altered in any way. All bacteria used in Bioclean STP are natural isolates, selected for desirable properties. Is Bioclean STP safe? YES, bacteria present in Bioclean STP are non-pathogenic (are not a cause of disease) to humans, animals and plants, and considered GRAS ( Generally Recognised As Safe)

13 FAQ s What kind of pollutants does Bioclean STP target safe? Nearly all natural and manmade organic contaminants can be degraded by Bioclean STP. What is the dosage of Bioclean STP? Dosage is highly dependent on the pollution level, flow, design parameters etc. Usually the dosage varies from 0.5 ppm to 5 ppm depending upon the WWTP.

14 FAQ s Can Bioclean STP control odour? YES. Usually the odour is due to the release of hydrogen sulphide or ammonia during the degradation process. Sometimes the odour may be due to the metabolic pathway of the degrading organism which is dominating the system at that point of time. Bioclean STP contains special strains that do not cause putrefaction during the degradation pathway. Some of them have the ability to biodegrade hydrogen sulfide and accelerate the natural nitrogen cycle. Bioclean STP enhances the rate at which ammonia is converted into nitrite and then into nitrate, eliminating the release of ammonia gas. Bioclean STP is a powder or liquid? Bioclean STP comes in a powder form and all the bacteria in the product are micro-encapsulated for a longer shelf life.

19 Biotech & Conventional Methods BIOCLEAN APPROACH Biotech products have special bacterial strains which has faster metabolic rates and can degrade broad spectrum of organic compounds. CONVENTIONAL APPROACH Conventional biomass have bacteria with poor metabolic rates and can degrade only simpler organic compounds. Controlled numbers of fecal coliform after the secondary treatment. No control on fecal coliform numbers. BOD and COD reduction using Biotech products is typically 90-95% and 85-90% respectively. 22 Case - 01 Plant : Location : Flow per day : Inlet BOD : Outlet BOD : Economics : Remarks : Bio-engineered Sewage treatment plant. Karunya University. 540 cubic meters. 340 to 480 ppm. 6 to 7 ppm. Treatment cost comes to INR 2.40 per 1000 liters of effluent per day. This whole STP was designed on the concept of bioengineering based on Bioclean STP. This plant can treat more than 540 cubic meter of sewage per day using only 9 HP of power. The outlet BOD is in the range of 4 to 6 ppm. All the treated water is being used by the farmers residing in the nearby areas on their farms for irrigation. It is clearly evident that the pathogenic bacteria in the treated water has been reduced to almost 97 % average. The treated water has been stored in the neighbouring tanks for recharging. They also have bore wells around 300 mts. from the storage point and the water is now being used for external purpose other than drinking application. The quality of the water in the neighbouring farm wells has improved dramatically and is now being used for agricultural applications. The Cattle, Birds and other animals have started consuming the water, which was not the case before. The Panchayat also claims that the birds, which use to migrated, have also come back.
