Composites competence center Located in Garching close to Munich, Voith Composites develops customized solutions for components and industrial production processes along the entire value chain. All development and construction processes are based on state-ofthe-art methods to design lightweight composite components. By applying current processing techniques these components can be made as single parts, in small batch or large-scale industrial production runs. A wide range of services completes the portfolio. 6 Lightweight Materials for Demanding Applications Advantages of Composites Due to their outstanding characteristics, fiber composites increase the efficiency of products and entire systems in a sustainable manner. This actually drives the attractiveness of these materials. 6

7 Increasing performance limits is often the most important reason for using composites. Highly-efficient innovation Throughout their entire life cycle, fiber composites provide clear benefits compared with metals in terms of rigidity and strength. Composites reduce the mass of components by a factor of three to five. Fiber composites do not corrode and can therefore be used in adverse and aggressive conditions. Real economic potential Composites significantly increase the efficiency of systems in plant and machinery construction. They reduce vibrations within systems and permit process optimizations, thereby achieving considerable material and energy savings. Consequently, paper machines can be operated more efficiently due to the higher natural frequency provided by fiber composite components. Simultaneously, the higher surface quality gives the paper a better finish, and the high fatigue strength guarantees low-maintenance operation. Drive shafts made of fiber composites transmit forces and torques over distances that cannot be realized with steel. Operational as well as total costs of the drive train are reduced through savings on intermediate bearings. Green engineering Mass requires energy to move. This is why fiber composites are an important driver in cutting CO 2 emissions. In reducing CO 2, the vehicle weight is a key element in achieving zero emission mobility. Used effectively, fiber composites can significantly contribute to this goal. The long service life of composites demonstrates their sustainable quality. CAD programs, analytical tools and the latest Finite Element analysis simulation software are complemented by adapted computation algorithms for this purpose. Results from material analyses, conducted in our own laboratory facilities, are used for quality control purposes and are incorporated into an internal material database. On its own designed or individually adapted machines, Voith Composites creates prototypes up to serial production of complex parts by employing manufacturing technologies such as filament winding techniques, press and RTM (resin transfer molding) processes as well as laminating techniques. The use of fiber rovings and new preform technologies minimizes waste, which provides our customers with cost-efficient production processes and firstclass quality. With the in-house quality laboratory, a strict monitoring of all relevant component properties is a matter of course. 9
