2 Workshop Smart metabolic engineering of plants for drugs biosynthesis will be a two-days event indented to present and promote the research activities of drugs biosynthesis in plants and GM issues through select talks. It will provide a stimulating platform to all the students, postdoctoral fellow and research trainees working in India and ICGEB Member States to demonstrate their research skills, activities and sharing innovative concepts and interaction with international and national scientists. 3 Message from Prof. Mauro Giacca, Director Geberal, ICGEB Trieste The ICGEB Meetings and Courses Programme funds, organises and promotes participation in scientific meetings, workshops and theoretical and practical courses in the Life Sciences in ICGEB Member States. ICGEB has been providing excellent opportunities to the international scientific community for direct interaction with forerunners of internationally recognised science since Over 565 topical courses, workshops and scientific conferences and meetings have been organised, or sponsored, over the period by the different components of ICGEB and Member States. Over 26,500 participants worldwide have attended these courses, including almost 22,000 directly from the ICGEB network. There is increasing international recognition that science- and technology-intensive solutions can significantly improve quality of life. This is particularly true, where biotechnology is concerned, since this field is of paramount interest for health (including the development of new medicines, vaccines and diagnostic procedures), agriculture (through the generation of plants with improved nutritional value and biotic- and abiotic-stress resistant crops), and the environment (by reducing waste and pollution). To be effective, such research-driven solutions, however, must not be restricted to developed countries, but need to be directly implemented in developing countries themselves. Towards this goal, a serious effort is required to build human capacities through a global approach, which includes training in science and in the applications of science, fostering innovation and building entrepreneurship. These issues are central to the mission of the ICGEB: a unique research institution blending high standard academic goals, focus on developing countries and a mandate on capacity building. Across its three Components, in Trieste, Italy, New Delhi, India and Cape Town, South Africa, cutting-edge research is carried out, with scientific excellence as a major objective. I take an opportunity to convey my very best wishes to all participants, speakers and organizer Dr. Shashi Kumar. I hope ICGEB Workshop 2018 on Metabolic Engineering will be an effective, successful and productive meeting to participants. Mauro Giacca 3

4 Message from Dr. Dinakar M. Salunke, Director, ICGEB, New Delhi ICGEB is an international intergovernmental organisation with a network of 3 Component Laboratories at Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India) and Cape town (South Africa), and 42 Affiliated Centres spread cross 64 Member States. ICGEB works towards a mandate for research and training in genetic engineering and biotechnology, addressing issues of developing countries. During the years, the New Delhi Component of ICGEB has made major contributions in research with main focus on both basic and translational sciences in the fields of human health and agriculture. In human health, fundamental questions in virology, immunology and host-pathogen interactions are being addressed. Development of diagnostics and vaccine candidates for dengue viral infection and malaria have been important advances in translational health research. In agricultural biotechnology, we have been working on insect resistance, abiotic-biotic stresses and crop improvement via genetic engineering. Bioenergy focus on synthetic biology for biofuel production. Structure and computational biology methods for determining macromolecular structures towards deciphering cellular mechanisms and exploring potential applications. The current theoretical workshop Smart metabolic engineering of plants for drug biosynthesis will promote the cutting-edge smart metabolic engineering technology for health and affordable drugs. It will open the platform for discussion for synthetic biology-enabled engineering from industry perspectives. The unique opportunity will be provided to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and relevant scientists to present and exchange new data and ideas and to catalyze the interaction between junior and senior researchers. Thanks to Dr. Shashi Kumar bringing together a galaxy of experts working in plant metabolic engineering and health related GMO research to tremendously benefit the participants. Further, we look forward to your engagement with ICGEB faculty in pursuing your research objectives at your parent institutions, on your return. 5 Message from Dr. Shashi Kumar, Organizer, ICGEB Workshop, New Delhi Dear Participants, Welcome to the ICGEB workshop, Smart metabolic engineering of plants for drug biosynthesis. This meeting on metabolic engineering and synthetic biology of plants is a part of the series of various meetings and courses, workshops and theoretical and practical courses in the Life Sciences organized by ICGEB every year to facilitate the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Synthetic biology is an extension of metabolic engineering by adopting programming concepts such as standardization and modularity, by designing pathways and products that may not exist in nature, and rewriting biosynthetic pathways. Research in plant metabolic engineering approaches has advanced rapidly since the advent of molecular biology. It has huge potential to contribute to the future of science and global bioeconomy by intercalating biosynthesis of economically viable drugs, improving food quality and bioenergy programs. This meeting will bring together leaders from plant metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and funding agencies. The program will highlight how innovative metabolic engineering and synthetic biology approaches can be used for drugs biosynthesis in photosynthetic organisms. The meeting will promote the cutting-edge smart metabolic engineering technology for health and affordable drugs. It will open the platform for discussion for synthetic biology-enabled engineering from industry perspectives. The meeting's collegial atmosphere, deep discussion sessions, and informal gatherings will provide a distinctive forum for cross-disciplinary networking and forge relationships for conducting and accomplishing collaborative future research. The focus of this meeting would be on the basic understanding and metabolic engineering of primary and specialized biosynthetic pathways for drugs in plant cells. Seminar sessions will cover topics in the organization, regulation and modulation of plant metabolic pathways, metabolite transport and storage, and emerging technologies in the plant metabolic research related to sesquiterpenoids pharmaceuticals agents, which are important for treating malaria, diabetes and tuberculosis etc. During this workshop, we are expecting many participants from academia and Industries. The meeting will feature keynote talks from Prof. Daniell, Prof. Pental, Prof. Timko and Prof. Cornish and Dr. Dasgupta and more who are highly experts in plant science and I believe their rich plant science experience will be of tremendous benefit to all participants. I hope The Future of Science meeting of ICGEB will provide a new platform to all the participants who aspire to produce cost effective drugs using plant system and carry a fruitful collaboration in the future.
