Healthy Aims WP02 Microfabrication technology Range of electrode and sensor capability for current and future applications Challenge is to work with suitably biocompatible materials Dense arrays that require microfabrication New markets / devices (e.g. retinal) Automation of processing which is very difficult / expensive by conventional means Offers a key to substantially larger, valuable market (e.g. Cochlear) Enables novel sensors (e.g. glaucoma, sphincter-closure) 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 3

Electrodes and sensors Electrodes are key to active implants Long term Short term They provide the interface to the body tissue Applications range from short term <1day to whole life implants Micro (array) (electrodes) Cochlear Retina (sensors) Sphincter closure Glaucoma Active electrodes are being developed to allow dense arrays with minimal wiring Macro Muscle stimulation Electrode is integrated to a multiplex component 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 4

Electrode tissue interaction Biocompatibility often means just that the implant and the body do not interact detrimentally With WP4 we are looking at ways to guide interactions between selected tissue and electrodes Improve coupling of electrode to nerve / muscle Reduce power consumption Better battery life Implant rechargeable battery Patterned surfaces Chemically modified surfaces Long term research which would not get done without a project such as Healthy Aims 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 5

Oesophageal Sphincter closure sensor INEX / ETB/ Mediplus Diagnostic of sphincter-closure issues, e.g. acid reflux Nasal loading Low-cost, single-use device, short-term Wires in the catheter to external electronics 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 6

Glaucoma sensor There is a presentation on this device today The development of the sensor portion took place in WP02 at EPFL and at IET 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 7

Retinal stimulator This requires a dense array of electrodes This can only be made by microfabrication techniques 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 8

Retinal stimulator In this application the electrode structure is very thin (10µm) The electrode tips are formed as truncated pyramids This improves the contact to the tissue 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 9

Modiolus probe (EPFL) Alternative to cochlear implant This is formed in two levels of Platinum in polyimide Process is similar to the process used by EPFL for the glaucoma sensor 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 10

Modiolus probe (ITE) Silicon based Direct insertion, no stylet needed Dense electrode array Potential to integrate active devices Force sensor Multiplex addressing 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 11

Active electrode (IMEC) Reduce the number of wires needed for dense electrode arrays Chips (H) are embedded in interconnection loom Pt electrodes (J) wrap around the chip 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 12

Lead out issue Low resistance, dense, biocompatible tracks is essential for dense arrays such as cochlear Platinum >10µm thick Needs to be flexible This is a tough challenge Work at INEX (top), ITE (bottom) is making progress 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 13

Summary WP02 is developing processes For novel sensors For new dense stimulation arrays To enable automation Processes can readily be adapted to new applications already address both emerging and proven markets Total value is substantial (>$200Mpa) Electrodes are a small part of that revenue, but are critical to exploitation 3rd March 2006 Healthy Aims Dissemination WP2 Electrodes [INEX] 14
