5 History Medical research, both preclinical and clinical, has formed a recognisable feature of Northwick Park Hospital site since its original opening in the early in the 1970s. Initially, the Medical Research Council funded Clinical Research Centre fulfilled this role until At this time Northwick Park Hospital Trust asked Prof Colin Green to set up an independent medical research group as a stand-alone charity, to carry out preclinical research into conditions of local and national concern. Northwick Park Institute for Medical Research (NPIMR) was thus formed in 1994 combining home grown research and surgical training. Start-up funding was supplied by a substantial grant from the Dunhill Medical Trust and this, together with various additional small grants and a fundraising campaign, formed the fiscal basis of NPIMR. Over the next 20 years, and in particular since 2008, NPIMR rationalised the research undertaken to a more appropriate, responsive mode to ensure direct relevance to patients and the NHS. Concomitantly, a significant increase in training, particularly complex surgical procedures, was developed and maintained. During this time attention was also paid to increasing collaborative connections both with academia and commercial enterprises and funding streams were established through grants, donations, contract research and training. NPIMR has been recognised for its research & training achievements and as such has received a philanthropic donation to refurbish its laboratories and to extend its foot print with an new build for a national surgical training centre.

7 Contract Research Support NPIMR s scientific research team is focused on providing high quality studies to propel your research, through the most appropriate models, into the market place. We are conveniently sited next to London North West Healthcare NHS Trust, which includes St Mark s Hospital, a world famous specialist hospital in the treatment of bowel disease. This proximity ensures that introductions can be made and advice sort from clinicians to further enhance the progress of your product. We can provide a full, comprehensive and bespoke service tailored to your requirements with all our surgical facilities and laboratories certified as a GLP facility. Our team of dedicated staff have many years of experience and are happy to discuss and advise the correct model/ surgical technique for your particular research. 9 Training and Education The innovation and quality of our training courses, which are unique within the UK, has been recognised by the Home Office and academia and enjoy an international reputation. Progression and extension of multidisciplinary training now forms a large part of our strategy. New courses such as head and neck laser, percutaneous tracheostomy and live endovascular have recently been established and recognised as high-quality, and unique in the UK. NPIMR is committed to expanding its internationally supported training systems and courses and to develop a new era of training models and capabilities to service future generations of surgeons and associated medical workers. We are in active discussions with the Royal College of Surgeons of England as to the level of collaboration and support we can mutually exploit to advance these training schemes. The Royal Society of Medicine has given their written support to the venture and supplies CPD points for our live endovascular courses. Plans to develop a national training centre at our Northwick Park base are well advanced and this is regarded as a vitality important step in developing training courses which would assist medical workers in meeting the demands of an increasingly complex healthcare environment. Any companies wishing to sponsor a course or provide training using their products please contact our main office on to discuss with either the Director or Business Manager. 11 R&D Over the past decade, the Institute s research has focussed on the rapidly developing area of regenerative medicine, specifically the development of natural tissue scaffolds to replace surgically removed or traumatised tissues. The objective of the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine group is to deliver, in collaboration with leading clinicians, therapies for targeted clinical disorders and diseases We use innovative ways of combining both biological and hybrid scaffolds with different cell populations to create functional tissue (sheets and organs) suitable for clinical use. Areas under investigation include the respiratory system (trachea), bowel, liver and wound healing constructs (skin and fistulas). Our strength is in our ability to develop new technologies for producing scaffolds and adjuncts (e.g. stents), together with novel ways of co- culturing and manipulating mesenchymal stem cells and the use of wide ranging imaging system for in vivo testing in different preclinical models. Further information is available from our website or by calling our office on NPIMR s research has resulted in the following innovations and applications: Innovation Regenerative Medicine Tissue Specific Decell Biological / Synthetic Scaffolds Perfusion Recell Stem Cell Therapy Device Design & Refinement Novel Surgical Techniques Orthopaedic Implants Pre-clinical Models Application Larynx Tissue Sealants Stoma Continence Device Fistula Reamer & Infill Dermal Substitute Trachea Bladder Bowel Oesophagus
