Enabling Healthier Populations Through the Immunization Integration Program Tuesday, February 21, :30-2:30 p.m. Interoperability Showcase Theater [OCCC, Tangerine Ballroom] DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed in this presentation are those of the author and do not necessarily represent official policy or position of HIMSS.

Today s Speakers IIP Project Team: Kafayat Adeniyi, MPH, PMP, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Floyd Eisenberg, MD, MPH, CNI Advantage, LLC Tom Leary, MA, CAE, FHIMSS, HIMSS Joyce Sensmeier, MS, RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN, HIMSS IIP Technical Advisory Panel Members: Shaun Grannis, MD, MS, FAAFP, Regenstrief Institute, Inc. Eric Larson, American Immunization Registry Association (AIRA)

Background Improved immunization rates are linked to: better health outcomes reductions in healthcare costs, and higher levels of productivity Globally, vaccination saves 2 to 3 million lives per year 1 1 U.S. DHHS, 2010 National Vaccine Plan

Background Health IT can play a key role in improving immunization rates Research shows that interventions such as standing orders, reminders and feedback for providers; IIS; and reminders to individuals, can improve immunization rates 1 Health IT plays a key role in automating and supporting these important interventions 1 Centers for Disease Control Prevention. Reminder Systems and Strategies for Increasing Adult Vaccination Rates.

The CDC aims to Advance the adoption of immunization-related capabilities within EHRs to: Improve work flow and make it easier for clinicians to administer appropriate vaccines Help provide clinicians access to a complete immunization history Improve information exchange between clinicians and immunization information systems Make it easier for individuals to access immunization information from their health care providers Improve the tracking and safety of vaccines

How is CDC Accomplishing These Goals? Supporting efforts to: Identify immunization-related software capabilities grounded in clinical workflows Gain input on those capabilities from clinicians, developers/vendors, immunization information systems, payers, and individuals Develop testing tools to help developers implement immunization capabilities in their software Launch an independent recognition program to formally recognize software products that contain immunization capabilities Harmonize EHR-related immunization efforts with its IIS efforts

IIP: A Multiphase Project Identify Requirements: 1. Literature Review 2. Interviews with Experts and Stakeholders 3. EHR Certification Incentives and Requirements Develop Conceptual Framework Create EHR Workflow-Centric Validation Tests Document & Publish Guidance for Immunization Workflow for Clinicians, EHR Vendors and Immunization Registries Publish Immunization-Related Capabilities, Guidance and Test Scripts for Comment Seek Public Input & Technical Advisory Panel Guidance to Update Capabilities, Guidance and Test Scripts Launch Testing, Validation and Recognition Program Phases I-IV Promote Program to Achieve Widespread Awareness and Adoption

Focus on Phase IV: What are we doing? Publish Immunization-Related Capabilities, Guidance, and Test Scripts Raise awareness of the importance of integrating immunization-related capabilities into health IT Engage software developers in using these tools to assess compliance of their health IT Implement an independent process for validating immunization-related capabilities within health IT Gain input from users on their implementation experiences

Achieve Recognition! Test Immunization-Capable Products Testing covers workflows focused on real-life scenarios, which clinicians and other stakeholders developed using specific immunization-related capabilities tested and available for review. Workflow 1: Register and Identify a Patient Workflow 2: Manage External Query, Response, and Reconciliation Workflow 3: Manage Information For Clinical Decision Making Workflow 4: Manage Inventory Workflow 5: Administer and Report Immunization Workflow 6: Manage Cohort of Patients Workflow 7: Manage Adverse Event Reporting Workflow 8: Provide Patient Access Apply today: 49fc408

Recognition Testing Process Apply for testing beginning 2/20 Receive access to IIP test tool and all prep materials Conduct practice tests Schedule official recognition test Successfully complete all required testing Test results submitted to HIMSS for recognition Product recognized in related IIP materials, on the HIMSS website, and through media and social outreach

Let s hear from the experts. Shaun Grannis MD, MS, FAAFP, Interim Director, Center for Biomedical Informatics, Regenstrief Institute, Inc. Eric Larson, Senior Technical Project Manager, American Immunization Registry Association

Why Should My Organization Participate in the Immunization Integration Program? Enables development and implementation of software addressing clinician end-to-end workflow, increasing efficiency to provide immunizations and related information to patients and caregivers: Reduces burden associated with reporting on immunization-related performance measures Improves vaccine tracking to help manage costs and inventory Reduces burden associated with transmitting data to local immunization registries Demonstrates product focus on achieving outcomes for both clinicians/providers and patients addressing both preventive and population health

ADDITIONAL SLIDES FOR HIMSS17 EVENTS [including]: EHRA Stakeholder meeting Non-profit stakeholder meeting Promo slide for Information Breakfasts/Meet-ups

Ask of EHRA Stakeholders Support Immunization Integration Program work to ensure implementation of workflows that support member products, registries, and other health IT touch points. Provide feedback on testing guidelines, which will ensure better coordination across multiple information gathering and dissemination settings. Endorse IIP staff engagement with EHRA general membership and arrange for presentation at the next general membership meeting Test products to achieve recognition

Ask of the Non-profit Partners [NPPs] Join fellow HIMSS Non-profit Partners to learn more about the Immunization Integration Program and how you and your organization can become involved in taking immunization workflow mainstream. Bring awareness of the IIP to your membership. Better understand how NPPs can inform their members of current progress related immunization workflow and software capabilities. Become an advocate for the program s mission and immunization integration.
