1 DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

2 WHAT IS BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING? Biomedical engineering integrates physical, chemical, mathematical, and computational sciences and engineering principles to study biology, medicine, behavior, and health. It advances fundamental concepts; creates knowledge from the molecular to the organ systems levels; and develops innovative biologics, materials, processes, implants, devices, and informatics approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, for patient rehabilitation, and for improving health (NIH Working Definition of Bioengineering).

3 WHAT IS BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING? Biomedical engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and techniques to medical problems. It combines the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve healthcare diagnosis and treatment. Due to the demand for increasingly sophisticated medical devices, The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a for biomedical engineers, with an estimated new careers created in the industry through 2016.
