5 The production of mageu 1 Scope 1.1 This specification covers the production and quality of mageu. NOTE a) The standards referred to in the specification are listed in appendix A. b) Information regarding the verification of the quality of mageu and the sampling plan to be used to assess compliance with the specification of a lot of mageu are given in appendix B. 2 Definitions 2.1 For the purposes of this specification, the following definitions shall apply: acceptable acceptable to the authority administering this standard, or to the parties concluding the purchase contract, as relevant Amdt 2 batch that quantity of mageu that has been produced from one fermentation process disinfect to kill pathogenic and most other micro-organisms but not necessarily to kill spores or viruses effective material a material that is capable of performing the required function(s), that contains no substance known to be toxic to human beings, that is not capable of imparting any taste or odour to the product, and that, in the case of an elastomeric or plastics material, is based on a polymer of a grade recommended by the polymer manufacturer as being suitable for the specific purpose(s) mageu the beverage produced by a lactic acid fermentation of maize meal (the fermentation being carried out without the addition of any acid other than lactic acid and without the addition of any cereal or grain other than wheaten products added in accordance with good commercial practice) and that consists wholly or partially of gelatinized maize meal acidified by the acids introduced or produced during the fermentation process, and that may contain permitted sweeteners, edible protein(s), minerals or vitamins (or a combination of these) NOTE Alternative names for mageu, found in other South African official languages include, but are not restricted to; mahewu, amahewu and amarhewu.
