HUT BI and Data Warehousing Pekka Barck, Head of Management Reporting Solutions, Nokia: Models for Data Warehousing Strategy and their Corporate Fit s of Pain and Focus in Data Warehousing today in Large Companies Recommendations and Success Models Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck The Data Warehouse Field is Mature The Data warehouse theory is tens of years old and practicing data warehouses has matured over the years, yet we are now facing many new challenges: DW is going operational Borders diminishing between database- and content management Near real-time loads SOA SOX Technical development of the products At the same time old practical problems need to be solved Warehouse in New Orleans Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck

The Perfect Data Warehouse The perfect data warehouse does not exist, except for in books and in this presentation. In reality we build compromises: Cost versus effort Politics Executive commitment Time constraints Lack of skills Changed requirements One-sided focus Only short term focus Fire department strategy Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck Manufacturing Case: The Near-Perfect DW Global & Local Product Data Global Digital Media Repository Document Management Systems Global & Local Customer Data D&B & External Business Data Order Fulfillment & Sales Systems Financial Systems Daily+ Updates Standardized Input Formats E D W Product Customer Order Financial Application Access Layer - Custom Views for Virtual Data Marts Product Information Consumer access, Customer access, Catalog Publisher Business Intelligence Sales, orders, demand, gross margin, quality, service metrics Market Connect D&B, Other Industry DBs Reporting Financial, sales, marketing, supply chain reports Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck

The Gazelle and the Lion Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows that it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a Lion wakes up. It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better start running From Thomas L. Friedman s bestseller The world is flat Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck Leaders, Followers and Strugglers On the next pages I will present what leaders, followers and strugglers currently focus on in the areas of: Strategy Mode of Operation Governance Architecture Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck

Strategy Any question, any time, anywhere Role-based, rules-driven and event-driven analytics Right-time advanced analytics One set of numbers, e-2-e view Predictive analytics about customers, product demand and market dynamics Subsequent investments are secured through proven ROI in previous releases Gartner s Frank Buytendijk: Information Democrats Movement towards actionable reporting Gartner s Frank Buytendijk: Information Monarchs Linking with corporate strategy Gartner s Frank Buytendijk: Information Communists Build it and they will come Hardly! Multiple truths, analysis and reports not synchronized Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck Mode of Operation Scheduled automatic quality comparisons Meta data integrated into any analytics Combine platform solidity and business line flexibility Cost-efficient fixed price creation in small increments Reducing IT bottleneck Creation of BI-standards Implementing investment follow-up Solving master data management Mostly only physical data models Overkilling ETL Intelligent ETL Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck

Governance Fine-tuning relationship between business and IT for data management Defining and refining corporate versus LOB data Supporting organizational wide quality culture Semantic web technologies to support master data management Single point of control for master data and metadata Solving data quality issues Too tight security policies Introducing organizational accountability for data quality Initiating data governance forum Creating roles responsible for data Taking strong measures to protect data Solving data load quality issues Limited executive commitment Addressing and defining completeness, validity and accuracy of data Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck Architecture Virtual data marts All end user tools from one single platform, one reporting tool Memory-to-memory transfers in data loads Closed loop data flows Several simultaneous projects (50+) pushing data into one platform Normalized data Consolidating data marts Fewer data warehouse specific tools Making architecture, standards and processes to support an enterprise approach Identifying latency opportunities Distinguishing ERP from DW Scalability, availability and performance Point solutions Fragmented architecture Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck

Do not Overestimate the Importance of Technology Based on research done by Pekka Barck Technology 11 % Information 10 % Corporate Culture and Organization 10 % Core processes 6 % Service Offerings 8 % Planning & Analysis 18 % Measuring 10 % Percentage showing number of problem areas in analytics & DW Customer Service Situations 17 % Customer Governance 11 % Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck Ten +1 Golden Rules Data loads: Touch it, take it. Prepare the DW-team for SOA and EAI challenges. If you do not have executive support for enterprise efforts, postpone them. The physical data mart is dying! The only reason we have had inflexible cubes and data marts has been performance, we do not need them as much anymore. Aggregate data is the source of many quality problems. Garbage-in-garbage-out is good! Do not make corrections during data loads, make sources responsible for what they are offering. If the data warehouse has drill-down capabilities to actionable detail information, it enables immediate decision making. In the Brave New World, all users access virtual layers of the DW. If you have not solved data stewardship and ownership before integrating two different units or functions, be prepared for a chaos. Prioritize business features before technical for quicker business buy-in. +1: Database vendors can be fully made responsible for system performance Nokia HUT.ppt / / Pekka Barck
