What really is the Internet of Things? 2 sides of the coin On the one side: it is taking dumb things and making them smart. It s about engaging technologies that we re used to and familiar with and then getting them onto the internet and making it meaningful. Then the flip side to this coin is taking things that are already smart (instrumented, interconnected, intelligent) and combining them together to create new and meaningful applications and human interactions. IoT is all about the ability to manipulate the physical world through technology such as combining sensors, data, real-time insights, meaningful analytics such as Natural Language Processing and actions, within platforms that connect devices, stream data, and facilitate the ability to create and deploy powerful new ideas. Create, deploy and manage these powerful apps in the cloud 2

IoT is driving Digital Disruption of the Physical World Accelerating advances in technology Are transforming every part of business Cognitive Analytics Cloud Computing Pervasive Connectivity Product Lifecycle Management Embedded sensors Improving operations and lowering costs Creating new products and business models Driving engagement and customer experience 3

IoT also facilitates advanced stages of asset management and asset performance management Instrumented Interconnected Intelligent Ever increasing range of sensors Volume, velocity, variety Event driven information Agility and Mobility Highly Connected Systems Cross Collaboration From data to actionable intelligence From reactive to proactive Whole lifecycle system optimization Asset Management and Facilities Maturity Absent Cognizant Evolving Proficient Advanced Costs Calendar based Usage based Condition based Predictive Risk based Performance Maintenance is an Expense Enterprise Asset Management Time and Effort Maintenance is an Investment Asset Performance Management 4

Connected devices represent enormous scale and impact Top 3 ways IoT will change how business operates Unlock new revenue from existing products/service Inspire new working practices or processes Change or create new business model or strategy 75% 62% of companies are exploring or using IoT in the business in some respects (internally/externally) 2 of C-suite executives believe that companies slow to integrate IoT will fall behind the competition 2 36% 25B 3.6T growth in processing, sensing and communications semiconductor devices Installed IoT Devices by Potential economic impact per year by

Medical devices designed for IoT are different from just 2-3 years ago Have to be designed with data generation and interconnection in mind Product is actually part of a larger system Have to be designed to adapt to unpredicted changes in the ecosystem Highly fragmented set of platforms, devices, languages, APIs, and user interfaces Emerging regulations: wireless devices, mobile applications, integrated care environment (ICE) External Connections base stations Cloud Based Services and Analytics Mobile Applications Higher frequency of releases and updates Added pressure on teams to deliver on time and with quality Hospital Information Systems Medical Device 8

Successful IoT products are those that move beyond physical to deliver an all new digital experience Features and functionality delivered by software and sensors both on the device and in the cloud Access through a multiplicity of devices, including mobile, may become the de facto product experience Faster and more accurate access to clinical data Added value through analytics Data fusion of multiple information streams improves analytics Reduced time to close the loop from readings to treatment With functionality shared across devices and with the cloud, it s less clear where a product begins and ends 9

The insights we seek drive us up the analytics value chain From lesser to greater complexity UNDERSTANDING Build and interact with structured and unstructured data in multiple detailed modes and views Descriptive Predictive Prescriptive Cognitive ASSISTANCE Leverage encyclopedic volumes of domain data in conversational interactions What has happened? What will happen? How can I achieve the best outcome? What is the best course of action? DECISION Provide bias-free advice that increases users confidence about their choices DISCOVERY Create new insights and value unfathomable on a traditional computing scale 10

Product development must also keep pace Increasing end user expectation for more specialized and tailored product ranges Development trends Product development processes and technologies need to evolve Exponential increase in machine to machine and machine to cloud connections Addressing security and regulatory compliance in a connected world Engineering Rigor Collaboration Across Teams Systems within Systems Development challenges Increase in software More connectedness Complexity! 11
