5 Typical Merits of Smart City Traditional cities Smart cities Smart cities 1 Waste management is a major challenge because of the lack of accurate information available to waste managers. Waste and recycling bins can be fitted with sensors that enable waste collection to be optimised, reducing the environmental impact of truck rolls Too much taxpayer money is spent as a result of reliance on energy inefficient solutions. Innovative energy efficiency solutions such as intelligent street lighting are deployed, which are monitored in real time Transporting people and goods is dogged by congestion, wasted hours and fuel. Parking space seeking behaviour adds to this congestion. Smart parking can be introduced, which can help ease congestion and generate sustainable new revenue by introducing demand- response pricing. Efficiency and effectiveness in almost every function a city has to offer Figure 8: Comparison of traditional and smart cities in five functional areas [Source: IBM, Analysys Mason, 2014] Some citizens may be excluded from accessing e-government and citizens information services by insufficient ease of access to Internet services. Public safety agencies have difficulty using all the information at their disposal to ensure public safety. Citizens and tourists are provided with free access to wireless data services through municipal Wi-Fi networks. Investment in real-time video surveillance and analysis of data enables faster reaction to public safety threats. 5
