WWT INTELLIGENT ASSET MANAGEMENT PROJECT At Northumbrian Water Mike Overy & Nikki Walsh

NORTHUMBRIAN WATER In the north east, we supply water and wastewater services to 2.7 million people In the south, we supply water services to 1.5 million people in Essex and 0.3 million in Suffolk We have in excess of 400,000 assets that we maintain within our current AMS. However we manage a portfolio of over 2,000,000 assets We have a very diverse asset base

THE PROBLEM WE RE FACING Bespoke classification system that had little governance and has organically grown over decades Lack of access to digital data has meant that we supplement a lot of our asset decisions with expert judgement Poor quality digital data means we don t have the ability to run meaningful analysis 3 NWG has specific project procedures which require training for any new framework partners

THE CHALLENGE Maximo / GIS Manufacturer Serial Number Model Number SharePoint Warranty Start Date 4

WHAT IS IAM (INTELLIGENT ASSET MANAGEMENT)? NEW TARGET OPERATING MODEL People Creating Capabilities Reliability engineering LCC Modelling Advanced analytics Process Creating Information Evidence for decision making New reporting Linking asset data to outcomes Digital Asset Data Linking Structuring Workflow management Creating Enhancing Standardising 5

NWG TRANSFORMATION OUR FUTURE Data world Real World 6

THE BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING (BIM) APPROACH WHERE DID IT START UK Government Construction Strategy (2011) created drivers to improve the efficiency, transparency and collaboration within the supply chain Key output is the Building Information Model, the digital description of every aspect of the built asset 7

Cost Refurbish or Disposal BIM IS THE START OF THE ASSET JOURNEY Costs of owning the asset over its whole life Policies and Strategies Governance Decision making Engineering standards Predicative analytics Work Management Criticality Proactive maintenance ppm planning Spares and parts strategy Reliability Engineering E2E Processes Whole Life Cost Management Optimum decision making and management of our assets Time 8

SHAREPOINT MAXIMO & GIS KEEPING IT SIMPLE BIM AND IAM WORLD DIGITAL DATA PHYSICAL ASSET DIGITAL INFORMATION 9

CLASSIFICATION IS ESSENTIAL Having a robust classification system sets the foundation for digital construction It allows us to assign assets into groups, based on a number of common characteristics. NWG has adopted Uniclass inline with PAS UNICLASS UNICLASS 2015 CPIc UK Government National Building Specification The software vendors have done a great job in convincing people BIM is 3D solid model Once you have a robust classification system you need to collection the digital data in a structured format, hence the development of Asset Data Sheets (ADS) and Product Data Templates (PDT) for the Water industry 10

PDT/ADS WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE 11

BENEFITS OF THE NWG APPROACH A few real benefits of BIM are: BIM compliant partners understand your needs and data requirements from the beginning of the project Giving other department within NWG access to high quality digital data about our assets Proactive interventions and predictive analytics UK classification for our assets 12

WHY US NOW? The planets are aligned, new AMS, new ECM system and currently we have poor data and data structure so there is a strong driver to change.. 13 NWG has a large diverse asset base BIM4Water endorsement and bought into our approach to PDT / ADS and we re also working the UK BIM Alliance We are currently enhancing multiple systems through our transformation programme (iam) to create a better foundation for the future Too great an opportunity to miss, we can never go back and do this later.

SUMMARY Our current transformation of iam and BIM will be a major cultural and behavioural shift we shouldn t underestimate the support required We have a unique opportunity data We all need to appreciate the true value of asset data We need one version of the truth and it needs to be accurate This is a long journey we re on our legacy issues are immense 14 Morally this is the right thing to do leave the robust legacy by investing in our future
