2 Overview What is the MEAP access course? The MEAP access course was launched in 2016 and has been developed for architects and graduates based overseas, it is particularly suited to those with less than five years professional practical experience and who do not envisage working in the UK, but would like to become eligible to apply for RIBA Chartered Membership. What are the benefits of doing the MEAP access course? It will give you an in-depth professional education in professionalism, clients, users and delivery of services, legal framework and processes, practice and management and building procurement. You will receive Affiliate Membership of RIBA as part of your course fee, providing you with professional support, knowledge and the full suite of information and advisory services from the RIBA. Having passed the MEAP access course, you will be eligible to apply for Chartered Membership via the Membership Eligibility Assessment Panel. Am I eligible to register for the MEAP access course? Provided you have passed a course in architecture of at least 5 years and are currently working in architecture you are eligible to register for the MEAP access course. If you re still unsure on your eligibility then please complete the expression of interest form at the rear of this prospectus and return to MEAPaccess@riba.org. When can I complete the course & assignments? You will require at least 2 years of recorded practical training experience, primarily in an architect s office. Course assignments can be submitted during the period that you are gaining your 2 years of recorded practical training experience. Description of the course Based on the RIBA Professional Criteria (PC) (but not UK specific) it offers a three day course covering: PC1 Professionalism PC2 Clients, Users and Delivery of Services PC3 Legal Framework and Processes PC4 Practice and Management PC5 Building Procurement There will also be a workshop to prepare candidates for submitting their portfolio to the Membership Eligibility Assessment Panel. Candidates will be set five short assignments and, upon passing these, they will be awarded a RIBA Certificate in Professional Practice and will be eligible to present their portfolio of work to the MEAP. How much does it cost? MEAP access course fee: 1,150, which includes RIBA Affiliate Membership. NB - payment can be made in instalments. How do I find out more and register? 4 Assignments As part of the MEAP Access Course candidates are required to fulfil five assignments. The assignments are linked to the RIBA Professional Criteria and are intended to demonstrate a candidate s knowledge and understanding of a range of subjects. In each case the work should be closely linked to the candidate s own experience and projects upon which they have worked. Each assignment is 1500 words and together should provide a comprehensive document covering many aspects of both project and practice management. The course will be aligned to the RIBA Professional Criteria and the assignments that have to be undertaken. The following pages give a brief description of the assignments together with the relevant RIBA Professional Criteria. Assignment 1 Professional Development 1. RIBA Certificates of Professional Experience: A minimum of two years (24 months) 2. A personal statement (250 words) 3. A personal reflection on your career and your professional development (1500 words) Referring to PC1 5 and the Plan of Work stages RIBA Code of Conduct and a discussion of your ideas for the future of architectural practice and your own aspirations PC1 Professionalism A successful candidate will demonstrate overall competence and the ability to behave with integrity, in the ethical and professional manner appropriate to the role of architect. The candidate will have the skills necessary to undertake effective communication and presentation, organisation, selfmanagement and autonomous working. The candidate will have a clear understanding of the architect s obligation to society and the profession and a sufficient awareness of the limits of their competence and professional experience to ensure they are unlikely to bring the profession into disrepute. Assignment 2 Clients and Services Using your project (or projects) and office experience: Describe your appointment and the services your office provides Fees charged or method of remuneration Discuss the relationship between the procurement route and your role The project briefing process The design and project team The allocation of resources within the team Conclusions and recommendations PC2 Clients, users and delivery of services understanding of the range of services offered by architects and delivering those services in a manner prioritising the interests of the client and other stakeholders. The candidate will have the skills necessary to provide a competent service, both singly and as part of a team, including understanding of client needs, appropriate communication, programming, coordination and competent delivery. This will be supported by knowledge of the briefing process, forms and terms of appointment, the means of professional remuneration, relevant legislation, and the execution of appropriate programmed and coordinated project tasks. 4

5 Assignments Assignment 3 1. Overview Give an overview of the legal system in your country or state 2. Using your project and office experience: Describe the regulations that control urban design, development, building codes and standards, health and safety as they apply to design and construction. Conclusions and recommendations PC3 Legal framework and processes understanding of the legal context within which an architect must operate, and the processes undertaken to ensure compliance with legal requirements or standards.. The candidate will have the skills necessary to positively interact with statutory and private bodies or individuals, and competently deliver projects within diverse legislative frameworks. This will be supported by knowledge of the relevant law, legislation, guidance and controls relevant to architectural design and construction Assignment 4 1. Using your office experience: Describe the types of practice and sizes of practice in your country or state Describe the practice ethos Discuss the office management the resource management, human resources management, provision for CPD and career advancement Making reference to the Plan of Work: Describe the project design management in the office Discuss the role of the architect in the design (and construction) team Conclusions and recommendations for future projects PC4 Practice and management understanding of the business priorities, required management processes and risks of running an architectural practice, and the relationship between the practice of architecture and the [UK] construction industry. The candidate will have the skills necessary to engage in business administration and ability to resource, plan, implement and record project tasks to achieve stated goals, either individually or within a team. This will be supported by knowledge of the nature of legal business entities, office systems, administration procedures and the relevant legislation. Assignment 5 1. Using your project and office experience: Describe a recent project or projects that you have worked on directly and briefly state your role and responsibilities Discuss the procurement route and the role of the architect Discuss the construction contract Describe the role of the architect on the project - during the design stage - during the construction stage Conclusions: discuss way that you might improve the project processes PC5 Building Procurement understanding of construction and contract law, construction procurement processes and the roles of built environment professionals. The candidate will have the skills necessary to plan projectrelated tasks, coordinate and engage in design team interaction, execute effective contract communication and resolve construction-related challenges and disputes. This will be supported by an understanding of contractual relationships, the obligations upon an architect acting as contract administrator, job-related administrative systems and The management of projects in the context of the candidate s professional experience. 5
