Edmonton Building Information Modeling Community A COMPILATION OF OUR MEETINGS BIM Super Session October 1 & 2, 2014

MISSION Our goal is to provide a regular venue for our BIM community. Albeit users, project managers, owners or technicians from all works of life to come together and through the group, further their skills, knowledge and passion for BIM. The bi monthly sessions are here for you to share, reach out and communicate your issues or findings within the industry today. This is a community for the BIM enthusiast of ALL levels and participation is not compulsory, we want you to feel no pressure, so come and simply observe if you wish.

November 15, 2012 Edmonton LRT SE to W Case Study Beyond Buildings Justin James, Dialog While much of the focus on BIM use has been on modeling buildings, other uses for BIM are gaining momentum. In this session, our speaker will share how BIM is being effectively used in the Southeast to West LRT project in Edmonton. Some of the questions they will address include: How can BIM assist in design of Transit or Transportation projects? Is it a worthwhile investment? How does it help the design team? How will it help the client?

January 10, 2013 The Future of BIM in Alberta Klaas Rodenburg Today's building industry is extremely fragmented and unproductive. This presentation will explore how BIM-enabled technologies offer companies a tool for collaboration that will result in buildings being delivered faster, smarter and greener. BIM is both a noun, the digital model and a verb, the processes used to add value. To be successful organizations must create a culture capable of leveraging the benefits provided by the rapidly emerging technologies. The Alberta Centre of Excellence for Building Information Modelling (acebim) is a virtual centre dedicated to improving the productivity of Alberta's building industry by lowering or eliminating the barriers to BIM adoption. We invite attendees to join acebim on our journey into the future as we explore emerging BIM topics such as IDP, Analytics, Crash Test Dummy, Research, Off-site and Modular construction, Safety, Education and capacity building, Costing, Electronic bidding, Green BIM, etc.

March 14, 2013 Cooling Plant on Campus (CPOC) UofA Project Case Study Paul Byrne, ONPA Kelly McLeod, Schendel; Jennifer Hancock, Chandos; Jaimie Petracek, Capital Case study and presentation of best practice

May 9, D Energy Maximizing ROI in a Virtual Environment Jean Carriere, 3D Energy Maximizing a building's return on investment (ROI) requires energy and cost optimization. The presentation will explore energy modeling, modularization and life-cycle costing early in the design. These strategies can provide efficiencies within the virtual design and construction process to generate project savings - and how those savings can be reinvested to deliver reduced life-cycle costs. The session will also touch on the role of Building Information Modeling (BIM), focusing on its advantages to deliver into lifecycle management software solutions. Jean Carriere is the Founder and Senior Energy Modeling Specialist for 3D Energy, based in Edmonton. For the past six years he has been pushing the boundaries of virtual design and construction and continues to explore new capabilities by integrating energy modeling in the design process. His background is in architectural technology and project management, he is now a Building Design Engineer focusing on energy optimization using a virtual environment. Jean's portfolio includes energy modeling work for daylight and lighting analysis, natural ventilation simulations, and life-cycle cost profiles for energy conservation strategies.

May 9, 2013 What s New in 2014 Revit Release Michelle Ovelson, Summit Displaced View in Revit 2014, there are plenty of valuable enhancements in the 2014 release and demonstration the most powerful improvements to the Revit 2014 platform. In addition a quick overview of the new features in Navisworks 2014 and Autodesk 360 services will be presented. Autodesk ReCap Studio/Photo - Point Clouds to the Next Level Michelle will present the latest and most promising free product included in all the suites and available for free download: Autodesk ReCap Studio. Autodesk ReCap Studio allows viewing, editing and manipulation of extremely large point cloud data files and provides a quick and effective file format that can be used in Autodesk products. ReCap Photo is a web-based service that helps generate point clouds from photographs, unleashing new workflows.

September 12, 2013 IPD Lot 51 Scott Hawryluk, Group 2 Vincent Plourd, Halsall Mirra Maheden, Gillian DeGroot, Williams Engineering Group2, Williams Engineering, & Halsall will present the EIA Lot 51 project as an example of an integrated BIM environment. Architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines participated in a single buildings information model environment to deliver a traditionally documented and constructed building. Through the presentation the team will discuss challenges and triumphs experienced with the integrated BIM implementation on this project, illustrate roles & responsibilities in the integrated environment and demonstrate the benefits of this methodology versus typical federated, individual discipline models.

November 14, 2013 Take Your Model Out of the Office and Into the Field! Carl Storms, Imaginit This session will look at how to leverage the power of BIM in the field with the help from some of the latest cloud-based software. Today's more information-rich models provide an opportunity for architects, engineers, construction firms and owners to solve issues before they are built. But you don't necessarily need to be a BIM expert, or be running full BIM projects to have effective clash detection or issue resolution and tracking in the field.

January 9, 2014 BIM in the Field Reed Munro, Cansel This presentation / discussion will show how to capture point cloud data and processing of all the data to help facilitate the creation of a 3d model within Revit.

March 13, 2014 Open Forum Justin James, REACH Consulting We are planning an open discussion for those of us in the industry that wish to nail down some of our wish list / needs, working towards a common Edmonton standard. We have all been or support someone who has been working with Revit for a while now, and we are all seeing some of the same common themes / workflow work a rounds, in our own company / project silo s. This is our chance to speak up and talk to one another and help each other build a better models with speed and efficiency. Resulting in smarter buildings.

May 15, 2014 BIM for General Contractors Dan Doherty, Clark Builders What are the BIM drivers for a GC Contract type BIM execution plan Design complexity Client understanding (budget) Consultant willingness to collaborate Challenges Lack of early Collaboration Clients risk Adverse Contract Void Subcontractors are removed from current workflows and have no use for a design model by the time they are brought on Lack of in-house skills Tools are limited Limited info
