The organization was nominated in 2007 for the Computer World Honors Program based on the successes achieved in their 7 year old Knowledge Management initiative. In addition, American Modern also received the Computer World award for "The Most Agile BI." NCR NCR is a Fortune 500 company located in Dayton Ohio with 2006 revenue of over $4 billion from operations in over 100 countries and territories. NCR s Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) is its primary reporting and data analysis environment. The data management function of the EDW includes business analysis, data modeling, system testing, and metadata management. 2 AMIG Speakers: Sandy Wagner Sandy Wagner is the Vice President of Corporate Information at American Modern Insurance. She has worked for the company for over 13 years. Currently, she is responsible for the Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence initiatives within the organization, as well as ensuring that American Modern s data is of high quality and valued as a corporate asset. The Corporate Information team delivers ad hoc and static reports, as well as sophisticated analytics to the business. Prior to this, Sandy was Associate Director of Information Technology at Cincinnati Public Schools. Her background includes over 30 years of IT experience within the Data Warehouse, Business Intelligence, Database Administration, Infrastructure and Application Development arenas. Sandy holds a MS degree in Organizational Leadership from the College of Mount St. Joseph, and a BS degree from the University of Cincinnati. Latha Subramanian Latha Subramanian is Business Application Manager at American Modern Insurance. She has worked for over 3 years at American Modern in the Corporate Information Management Team overseeing Data Management efforts. She has prior industry experience working in the field of Customer Relationship Management and Data Warehousing. Latha holds a MBA in Finance and Marketing from Cardean University. She is an active member of The Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI) and the SWOC DAMA chapter. Duke Ganote Duke Ganote has been Data Modeler/Architect at American Modern Insurance for almost 3 years. He has a decade of experience in enterprise-level data modeling, specializing in data warehouses and data marts. Duke has worked with both Inmon-style and Kimball-style architectures, and is experienced in formal software verification. He enjoys leveraging built-in Oracle capabilities for efficient ETL and queries, and is almost obsessive about referential integrity. Duke has a Master s in Engineering from Ohio State, and Bachelor s from the University of Cincinnati. Abstract: In 2000, American Modern embarked upon a three pronged, long range initiative coined modernlink, to: a) web enable its insurance transaction processing b) replace its aging legacy processing systems and c) develop a knowledge management architecture. As part of the Enterprise Architecture Transformation initiative, American Modern created a roadmap to develop an Enterprise Data Model, an Operational Data Store, an Enterprise Data warehouse, a metadata management process, a themed analytic data mart layer, and an enterprise-reporting portal. This Knowledge Management architecture would provide the company with the ability to monitor, measure, and analyze existing business, refine and improve current practices, and identify new opportunities. Now, in its eighth year, the Knowledge Management architecture has delivered significant results. Please join us in learning about how our Knowledge Management Architecture helped us achieve the following: 20% annual increase in directly attributed new business; 25% improvement in current Product Review and Management cycle time; 21% improvement in Product Filings cycle time; and 2% reduction in total loss ratio directly attributed to the modernlink initiative

3 NCR Speaker: Jeff Nottingham Jeff Nottingham is a member of NCR s EDW team with a focus on data management and financial data reporting. In his 13+ years with NCR, Jeff has held software engineering positions working on a variety of applications including internal marketing systems, reseller information sharing software, and the EDW. His most recent assignments included the implementation of a new financial reporting application and the creation of a new EDW for NCR s Teradata Division prior to its separation from NCR. Jeff is a Certified Teradata Professional holding a BBA from Ohio University and an MBA from the University of Dayton. Abstract: NCR is a Fortune 500 company located in Dayton Ohio with 2006 revenue of over $4 billion from operations in over 100 countries and territories. Founded in 1884 by John H Patterson, NCR was the maker of the first mechanical cash register. Today, NCR is a global leader in retail systems, ATMs and IT services and continues to expand into a number of other business ranging from health care to entertainment and gaming. NCR s central mission to use innovative technology imaginatively to solve customers business problems has not changed for over 120 years. NCR s Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) is its primary reporting and data analysis environment. In addition to its traditional reporting capabilities, the EDW plays a vital role in numerous processes including the monthly closing of the books, SOX compliance, order flow analytics, and call center knowledge sharing. Over 35 source systems feed data to the EDW into 33 high level data subjects. 5,100 internal plus 2,000 external users account for over 400,000 queries against the EDW per month. The data management function of the EDW includes business analysis, data modeling, system testing, and metadata management.
