1 Software Announcement August 10, 2004 IBM Monitor for Multiplatforms, V2.2 helps to analyze application performance and assess requirements for future growth Overview The Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) platform is increasingly adopted by organizations to support e-business applications. This adoption is frequently accompanied by a set of challenges related to monitoring and ensuring application health. While J2EE provides a rich environment for defining business logic, complex interactions between distributed, multitiered, object-oriented applications pose a difficult management problem. WebSphere Studio Application Monitor (WSAM) for Multiplatforms enables customers to perform in-depth problem determination and performance analysis of mission-critical enterprise J2EE applications running on the WebSphere Application Server platform. The technology allows enterprises to open up the Java black box to see what is specifically happening within the applications, as well as track and analyze their performance and resource consumption patterns over time. WSAM is a lifecycle tool that can be used in development, test, and production. WSAM monitors heterogeneous environments and provides both high-level and detailed views of transactions, in real-time, without requiring the modification of application byte code. WSAM also captures and stores resource utilization data at a transactional level, to help the IT staff analyze historical trends and plan for future capacity growth. WSAM for Multiplatforms consists of two components: A central managing server that monitors individual or groups of applications, generates operational performance alerts, stores all performance and availability metrics in a database, and manages software levels. Data collectors that are installed on the WebSphere Application Servers being monitored. Data collectors are available for WebSphere on AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, and Microsoft Windows Data collectors for the WebSphere Application Server on z/os and for the CICS Transaction Server are available as separate products. Key prerequisites Refer to the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections. Planned availability date August 10, 2004 (electronic software delivery) September 3, 2004 (media and documentation) At a glance Monitor (WSAM) for Multiplatforms enables application developers, application analysts, and quality assurance personnel to: Monitor and analyze the behavior of large-scale e-business applications Quickly take corrective actions to resolve problems Assess resource consumption and plan for future capacity Deliver a non-intrusive solution that does not require modifications to the application code For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: YE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. 2 Description WSAM for Multiplatforms is designed to be used during the lifecycle of an application. WSAM enables Application Developers and Test/QA personnel to see the actual behavior of WebSphere applications, locate problems and bottlenecks, and resolve them in real-time. WSAM allows application analysts to assess resource consumption, analyze application performance, and assess requirements for future growth. WSAM helps forecast and discover application problems earlier in the lifecycle to mitigate deployment risks and speed up the deployment process. WSAM consists of two components, a managing server and data collectors: Data collectors run on the WebSphere Application Server being monitored. The data collectors collect information on the applications being monitored and on active transactions. Data collectors are available for WebSphere on AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, and Windows The managing server acts as the brain of WSAM. The managing server gathers the information sent by the data collectors, processes it, and displays it on a Web browser. The managing server also provides the functionality for monitoring individual or groups of applications, managing software levels, generating operational performance alerts, and storing all performance and availability metrics in a database. WSAM has a real-time, Web-based, visual interface through which applications can be dynamically monitored to varying levels of details. The level of monitoring can be adjusted without having to stop/start the application server. The information collected during the monitoring is stored in a database and can be recalled to provide a complete history of all performance and availability metrics. Ready-made reports are available, as well as facilities for creating customized reports. WSAM is non-intrusive and requires no modification to the code of the applications being monitored. WSAM provides detailed memory analysis capabilities by displaying the memory heap, garbage collection statistics, and candidates for memory leaks. WSAM has extensive traps and alerts capabilities. Traps can be set for specific conditions or thresholds, and the alerts that are generated can be sent to other systems management frameworks (for example, Tivoli, BMC). A data collector for CICS is available for order as a separate product. When the CICS data collector is installed, transaction flows and requests spanning the WebSphere Application Server and CICS platforms can be tracked and correlated. Monitor for Multiplatforms V2.2 is being delivered only in English, but, it will run in a double-byte character set (DBCS) environment. Product positioning WSAM for Multiplatforms is a component of the deployment tools that support the WebSphere Application Server platform. These tools offer a full solution that spans the application lifecycle, and helps increase the productivity and effectiveness of application developers and testers.
