1 Software Announcement June 14, 2005 LINUX V2 provides an integrated Linux POS platform to enable most leading-edge applications and technologies Overview LINUX V2 (IRES V2) consists of a SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server (SLES) based distribution for IBM xseries store servers and select IBM point of sale (POS) devices that includes features tailored for the retail environment. It offers retailers an open, cost-effective, retail-optimized platform for delivering next-generation retail solutions. IBM hardware and drivers are pretested and supported for IRES. With IRES V2, on demand retailers can acquire the advantages of Linux, run it at the point of sale and on back-office servers, enjoy robust functionality drawn from many years of IBM retail experience, and receive outstanding technical support from IBM. Like IRES V1, IRES V2 includes a retail-optimized distribution of Novell s robust SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server called Novell Linux Point of Service (previously named SUSE LINUX Retail Solution or SLRS). IRES V2 adds function gained from many years of experience in retail solutions, such as automatic flashing of POS BIOS, improved problem determination including dump button enablement, improved operator guidance, a simplified configuration graphical user interface, and systems management. IRES supports select IBM SurePOS systems, IBM xseries hardware, and IBM middleware. IRES V2 also includes a cost-effective, retail-friendly support and maintenance model that helps deliver the long lifecycle and rapid response retailers need to help maintain high uptime in the store. IRES can scale to many different POS application solutions, giving you the flexibility to run it on most systems ranging from non-gui clients to full graphic Java -based solutions. In addition, customers who purchased the IRES V1 product and are current with their software maintenance PRPQs can order this product, IRES V2, at no additional cost. Version 1 customers who are not already Passport Advantage customers will need to enroll in Passport Advantage. 2 Description Key prerequisites The customer s signature on the IBM Passport Advantage Attachment for Software Maintenance for LINUX (Z ), which documents the respective support and maintenance responsibilities from IBM and Novell, Inc. IBM xseries servers (with 1 or 2 processors) certified for SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server (SLES 9 x86) with a minimum of a Pentium 300 MHz processor and 1 GB of RAM Select IBM POS systems, including SurePOS 700 Series, SurePOS 600 Series, SurePOS 500 Series, SurePOS 300 Series, select SurePOS 4694 POS Systems, and IBM Kiosk (see the Technical information section) with a minimum of 128 MB (dependent on application) Retail Environment for SUSE LINUX V2 The LINUX V2 (IRES V2) is a software offering which includes features tailored for retail point of sale operations by IBM and the Novell Linux Point of Service, which is distributed by Novell, Inc. Together, this creates a Linux software solution for IBM xseries store servers and select IBM point of sale (POS) devices. This offering is designed to provide retailers with an open, cost-effective, retail-optimized platform for delivering next-generation retail solutions while IBM and Novell provide customer support for the environment and IBM provides support for IBM-specific drivers. The advantages to the retailer include: 1. Help in lowering total cost of ownership This offering enables retailers to access a single point of contact for support and maintenance of their Linux platform over the long term. It provides systems management and fast problem determination via diagnostic bundle preparation and dump push button. A single platform for both POS and enterprise systems can help improve in-house support efficiencies by reducing the number of distinct OS skills needed for support. And a single POS could be used in smaller stores as both a client and server. A long-term support model helps minimize upgrades and provides stability for a Linux platform. IRES helps leverage existing technology, potentially protects investments, and provides a flexible foundation for the future. 2. Flexibility Five customizable packages which are specifically designed for IBM retail POS terminals help to reduce complexity, facilitating ease of installation and optimizing your retail environment. These versions include: Small OS footprint for text-based clients Small OS footprint with Java and Graphics capability OS footprint with Java, Graphics, and Browser capability High functionality POS Clients with full GUI capability A combined server/client image so that both the client and server code can reside within a single POS unit IRES is scalable to different POS application solutions, giving you the flexibility to run it on most systems ranging from non-gui clients to full graphic Java-based solutions. Support for dual displays enables greater customer service. Support for USB devices provides potential investment protection for new higher-speed peripheral devices. 3. Reliability Linux has significant high-availability functionality included with the carrier-grade support provided in the server SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server (SLES) distribution from Novell IRES can be configured with two servers for increased reliability and potentially less down time. 4. Systems management Integrated systems management functionality is designed to facilitate the installation and upgrade processes. IRES provides industry-standard system-wide configuration and management. The remote boot support option for diskless POS clients helps minimize POS hardware and manageability requirements. 5. Software compatibility IRES helps enable leading-edge POS applications and Web-based applications, as well as provide systems management and remote boot capabilities. It delivers flexibility to support open standards for the retail industry, including JavaPOS drivers, facilitating future integration. IBM has performed Linux integration testing with IBM POS hardware and IBM middleware, including IBM DB2 Universal Database, IBM WebSphere, and IBM Tivoli systems management products for Linux, to help ensure successful deployments for Linux retail solutions. The retailer can leverage best-of-breed third-party offerings, including Ready for IBM Retail Store Innovations solutions developed by independent hardware and software vendors, and validated for use with IBM POS technologies. Taking advantage of IRES enables you to tap into our comprehensive retail industry and operating systems knowledge. We have forged a proven track record through many years of global experience and over millions of POS terminal installations worldwide in the retail sector. You can be confident in our ability to bring our retail skills and experience to your Linux environment

3 Product positioning Retailers worldwide value IBM functionality and the worldwide support that IBM offers. IBM has a proven reputation for delivering high-quality support for POS solutions.
