Capping Stack Soft Shut In Real-time Simulation of a Soft Shut-In 2017 MEXUS Exercise Results 3/6/2018 Leader in Contemporary Subsea Solutions

2017 MEXUS Exercise Originating in 1980, this joint agreement between the USA and Mexico committed both countries to create a Joint Contingency Plan regarding pollution of the Marine Environment by means of hydrocarbon discharges & other hazardous substances. For 2017, Anadarko was chosen to lead and host the MEXUS Response Drill. Anadarko invited Trendsetter Engineering, addenergy & GRI simulations to be a member of the exercise response team This presentation attempts to inform you on the roles played by the team as well as provide an overview of the soft shut in sequence played out during the exercise

MEXUS Participants Capping Installation & Operation add energy GRI Simulation Trendsetter Engineering add energy s Drilling and Well Operations division offers specialized consultancy services and support from well design to operations; they aim to minimize risk, expenditure and exposure of Oil and Gas drilling operations globally GRi Simulations Inc. is a Canadian company focused on real-time simulation, modeling and visualization of critical marine activities to support increased process efficiency and operational safety. Trendsetter is a premier provider of specialized subsea solutions for oil and gas companies across the globe. We specialize in solving unconventional problems with conventional field proven technology, especially in a crisis environment.

Participant Background

Trendsetter Engineering Trendsetter is a premier provider of specialized subsea solutions for oil and gas companies across the globe. We specialize in solving unconventional problems with conventional field proven technology, especially in a crisis environment. During Macondo, Trendsetter was actively involved in the operations surrounding the well kill. Post Macondo, Trendsetter was integral to the development of Capping and Containment hardware that has become the industry standard in source control response equipment Gen 3 Capping Stack

GRI Simulations Since 1998, GRi Simulations Inc. (GRi) has been focused on delivering high-fidelity solutions for critical marine operations. VROV is a 3D interactive real-time simulation system which supports the complete range of AUVs, Inspection and Work Class ROVs, and the full spectrum of sensor and intervention subsystems Since 2004 GRI has been working with Trendsetter on the creation of realistic subsea environments for pilot training and field development. Since Macondo, GRI has modelled and placed in the simulator the majority of the hardware Trendsetter has built.

add energy What they do: Add Energy is an International Consultancy Provider for the Energy Industry that combine specialized engineering and proprietary software solutions to deliver a complete suite of optimized consultancy services Who they are: Add Energy is established in key energy regions across the globe in close proximity to their clients. They are headquartered in Stavanger, Norway and operate through offices located in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. They are the architects behind the creation of OLGA Well Kill, the industries first well bore simulator which has subsequently become the industry standard program for well control analysis.

Mechanics of a soft shut in Why soft shut in? Controlled shut in of a blowing well as safely as possible to minimize potential damage to the casing General CS configurations Ram based vs Valve Based Erosion considerations Hardware requirements Chokes Purpose and Configuration Gate Valves Purpose and Configuration

ROV simulation & its role in exercise support

The simulator mimics real-world conditions Using soft shut in procedures based on a well bore schematic and predicted reservoir properties, a soft shut in dive plan is created to perform a shut in of the selected Capping Stack using the ROV Simulator Using the Capping Stack operating manual, the dive plan follows the correct procedures to operate each component HOLD periods are in place after each step to monitor reservoir performance via the chemical injection panels

Well Bore Analytics linked to Operating Procedures Addenergy s OLGA Well Kill software establish the predicted reservoir pressure response curves The cross sectional profile of the Capping Stack flow paths, and the sequence to shut in the Stack contribute to calculating the pressure response curves. The ROV shut in sequence in the procedure matches the predicted pressure response curve defined by the soft shut in analysis HOLD points allow the bore pressures to stabilize between steps

Real Time Pressure Monitoring via Analog Gauges The gauges are linked to the P&ID of the specific capping stack As the sequence to shut in the stack is performed, the gauges react accordingly depending on the configuration of the center bore and side outlets Digital read outs add a higher level of resolution, mimicking the response from a digital pressure gauge

add energy Olga Well Kill Olga-Well-Kill has been designed for planning and evaluation of dynamic kill and well intervention options. Olga-Well-Kill has been used on 70+ live blowout and well control incidents including: Porter Ranch, California (2015) Elgin gas blowout, North Sea (2012) Macondo blowout, Gulf of Mexico (2010) Montara gas blowout, offshore Australia (2009) and has been central in the preparation of more than blowout contingency plans Available features include: Dynamic kill simulations Top kill simulations Kick tolerance and circulations Bullheading simulations Crossflow potentials Shallow gas analysis Versatile graphical presenter
