PwC s video analytics solutions

Industry overview Mature analytics engines and a significant increase in camera and server processing power have added a cutting-edge dimension to video surveillance systems. There is more flexibility and considerable cost reduction in the entire mechanism as fewer servers are required for smooth operation. IP network cameras have become business intelligence tools as by deploying video analytics, end users can leverage specific analytics data and convert it into actionable intelligence for functions such as marketing, health and safety, and personnel management. With the increase in processing power, cameras can host an everincreasing array of analytics functions. Better analytics can give the operator more reliable information, thereby improving response time and effectiveness. 2 PwC

Advanced analytics: An overview Current situation Advanced analytics Potential benefits Typical surveillance operators monitor more than 30 screens which show feeds from 100+ cameras. However, 98% of video feeds go unseen and 95% of incidents are missed after 20 minutes. 5 Boundary breach detection Virtual boundary With the help of already installed cameras, clients can track the entry of people in certain designated zones and analyse the number of visitors, time of visits and duration they stayed in that region with the help of their images. By setting up a virtual boundary, businesses can keep intruders from accessing certain areas. Forbidden area violation Setting up a designated zone as forbidden means there should be no trespassing in the area. Our algorithm will trigger an alarm as soon as any violation is detected in this forbidden area. Video analytics can help clients automatically detect realtime violations. It helps detect malicious activities and policy violations or invasions, thus enhancing safety and security of the warehouse/factory. PwC s video analytics solutions 5

Theft analysis Inventory theft alert Surveillance camera feeds could be analysed to keep track of inventory currently lying in the identified zones, and alerts can be set if objects are being moved in an abnormal fashion or at an unexpected time. By identifying lying inventory and detecting any movement, the system can alert area managers if it detects theft. Loitering The analytics solution keeps track of passers-by and records time they spend in monitored zones. It alerts the system when more than usual time is spent by a passer-by at the same spot. Enhanced security level in monitored areas 6 PwC

Anomaly detection Suspicious movement analysis The analytics solution will trigger an alarm if someone spends an unusual amount of time in a particular area. The solution helps businesses in early detection of any suspicious activities happening within their premises. A system can be deployed to detect any suspicious activities being carried out by a person or group. Abandoned object By analysing the video stream, the system can detect unattended stationary objects and help in the early detection of threats in cases where objects are left behind with harmful intentions. A client can utilise the solution to detect any threat from suspicious objects left behind to cause harm. It can be used to reduce misplacement or deliberate abandonment of objects on premises. Fire alert Traditionally, CCTVs or smoke detectors are used to detect smoke or fire. However, the major disadvantage is that they respond to smoke or flames when the fire has already started. On the other hand, thermal imaging cameras see through smoke and provide the precise temperature/ location of hotspots. Clients can benefit from early detection of rising temperatures at local spots, helping them to protect their valuable assets from fire. PwC s video analytics solutions 7

Density/flow Bottleneck analysis By deploying this solution, a client can be alerted about high-density areas where movement is hampered. Clients can use it to identify hotspots at their premises which can be leveraged to improve their yard layout. Businesses can optimise their premises to reduce wait time. Entry/exit counts Our solution keeps a count of objects entering and exiting a zone. After setting a line, direction and object size, the algorithm will count the number of people or objects crossing that line. The solution helps clients in evaluating their service levels by keeping a count of people and cars exiting during a specified time interval for example, people entering and leaving the factory during work hours. Traffic queueing The solution counts objects and evaluates density in a zone. Clients can use this solution to evaluate wait time outside yards and for early detection of situations causing delay in cargo movement. The solution helps clients in improving inland container depot (ICD) efficiency and their service levels. 8 PwC

Trip tracking Path analysis within an area By deploying this solution, a client can analyse routes taken by its forklifts/people within the yard. This helps uncover underutilised zones and optimise space within the yard. Helps in identifying bottlenecks and underutilised areas within the yard. Presence distribution map Heat maps will reveal areas where movements get hampered. It gives a client insight into hotspots at their premises which can be leveraged to better their layout for faster reloading. Clients can use our solution to identify overcrowded spaces inside their premises. Absolute population count The analytics solution will trigger an alarm if more than the expected number of people are gathered in a monitored zone. This solution helps a client with early detection of any threat within the premises. A system can be deployed to identify and alert any security threat posed by a large gathering of people. Licence plate recognition The licence plate recognition system extracts characters from license plate(s) and logs them in the database. This solution helps businesses manage their fleet at their premises. Businesses can track both the incoming and outgoing fleets and record their refilling time. PwC s video analytics solutions 9

Operational efficiency Improving stevedore efficiency Measure the process cycle time for each of the steps i.e. lowering of the crane, cargo being rigged, cargo being lifted, cargo swinging towards the quay, cargo being lowered down, cargo being unrigged and crane being hoisted up using crane-based sensors and video stream from existing security cameras. Improvement in stevedore efficiency by providing insights through analyses of process cycle time information at the step level. Cargo handling time Predictive maintenance of equipment This solution identifies hotspots that might be overstressed and inspects high and low voltage using thermal cameras and infrared imaging. On-equipment sensors measure the temperature of the equipment and vibration and crossreference these against the threshold to identify points-offailure ahead of time. Reduction in downtime due to timely maintenance of equipment, as well as reduced repair and maintenance costs. 10 PwC

Yard and warehouse space utilisation Video feeds from warehouse cameras and sensors together can be used for the detection of cargo lying on the premises as well as discharge of cargo, which can then be used to reconcile reports with actuals and store cargo optimally in real time. The solution helps in optimal utilisation of space, prevents damage to the cargo and eliminates discrepancies between reports and actuals. PwC can help you deal with all of these and other challenges through the use of analytics, allowing you to have access to information quickly and accurately and in formats that will enable you to make meaningful business decisions in real time.
