Service and Support for Science IT

What is Science IT? FILL THE GAP from IT to Science Dedicated Support Center for Scien8fic Compu8ng and Data Analysis Speed SPEED : faster 8me to solu8on ACCESS : to infrastructure, socware, exper8se ENABLE : use IT technology and socware for new ideas Access Enablement

What to expect of S 3 IT Science IT as a Service - Consul<ng Support on a Project basis We adapt SoCware, Workflows, Infrastructure to your needs (not the other way round) We use Cloud as our opera<onal concept to cover the very heterogeneous requirements with commodity hardware and socware Our guiding principles are Scalability, Extensibility, Reusability

Infrastruktur needs Supercompu8ng Used as a scien<fic instrument (few groups) Theore8cal physics, Astrophysics, Math, Computa8onal Chemistry, Biochemy, Quantum chemistry Simula8ons, Data genera8on and analysis, con8nuous usage Cluster compu8ng Used as a workhorse (many groups) Life Science, Biochem, Geography, Medicine, Digital Humani8es, Banking and Finance, Computer Science,... Data analysis, Sta8s8cs, Parameter studies, etc Non- con8nuous usage Server compu8ng Used for interac<ve analysis (everyone) Interac8ve processing, visualiza8on, steering of simula8ons. Commercial and open source socware Daily usage but not con8nuous.

Scien8fic SoCware We help you to deploy your socware and tools on our infrastructure We coordinate licenses for commercial socware Matlab Mathema8ca is next Training foreseen for all Dedicated python trainings already ongoing Cloud usage trainings on individual basis

MATLAB TOTAL ACADEMIC HEADCOUNT

MATLAB TAH Total Academic Headcount instead of individual licenses flat rate for all MOST es included (all that the UZH has ever paid for yet and used, and more)

3 License Types 2 Designated Computer (DC) License types 2 versions: STUDENT and STAFF, same process No network access needed to a license server Offline usage No limit on toolbox usage or number of users Network License Only needed for classroom or cloud usage The ID License server should be enough for all If a good reason exists to deploy your own license server we can do it together, only if absolutely needed

Student Staff difference Different ac8va8on keys Student license bound to Host AND Person Staff license bound to Host only Both can install several copies

Changes In order to make use of the new toolboxes, become independent of the license server or if you want to upgrade: REINSTALL Request ac8va8on key (web form) Register with MATHWORKS Retrieve License (see Sergio s talk)

Expira8on DC licenses expire by Sept If we renew TAH, your license gets automa8cally renewed Needs to be online for this Installa8on calls home every month if online If new license is available it gets automa8cally installed

Exis8ng Licenses Are put into STORAGE by MathWorks They will STOP WORKING as of September 1 Any exis8ng installa8on can con8nue as is only the license server loca8on/file needs to be updated to the new file (ID license server) If you want to profit from new func8onali8es (offline, toolboxes): REINSTALL If we decide to DISCONTINUE TAH next year, these licenses can be retrieved from storage and they con8nue as if nothing would have happened If we con8nue with TAH, they just remain in stasis NO MONEY IS PAID BACK

TOTAL ACADEMIC HEADCOUNT COST

Cost Model Students are free Staff Year 1 S3IT requests a contribu8on by Group/Ins8tute/ Department (whatever people can do) All staff that are member of a paying group are automa8cally eligible to TAH Each group nego8ates contribu8on individually Staff Year 2ff Model will be adapted based on usage numbers Central funding will be sought together
