Siemens Perspectives on Industry in the USA June 11, 2014 Wolfgang Rubrecht, Vice President Automation Systems Answers for industry.

Industry is a Key Driver for U.S. Economic Growth Key Economic Indicators June 2, 2014 PMI: 55.4%. 12 th month of expansion. 17 of 18 industries reporting expansion. New orders, production, inventories growing. The results confirm the view of a spring snapback in the U.S. economy after a harsh winter contributed to a 1% contraction in real gross domestic product for the first quarter. The Wall Street Journal, June 2, 2014 Page 2

There is Optimism about the Future of Manufacturing A new era of productivity in large-scale manufacturing Software is driving productivity, efficiency, timeto-market and flexibility Software is changing the entire industrial value chain This virtual-to-real manufacturing will result in a sound balance between efficiency and customization, something that has constrained manufacturing for centuries Key vertical market growth (aerospace and automotive) driving technology and innovation Page 3

New Technologies Are Transforming Industry New Vocabulary Internet of Things Big Data Smart Manufacturing Industrie 4.0 Connecting information strategically. Industry is a motor for innovation and growth worldwide. Page 4

Old Assumptions About Manufacturing Are Changing Changing Assumptions Build it there and => Distance matters Sell it here Cheaper labor cost => Cost increases / productivity gains Energy imports => The shale gas boom Brawn over brains => Manufacturing becomes knowledge work Increasing competitiveness for the U.S. as a manufacturing location Page 5

The United States is Experiencing a Resurgence Key advantages Proven track record in innovation World leader in software product development Massive domestic market demand Lower energy and transportation costs Lower supply chain risks Competitive workforce Focus areas Making manufacturing cool Nurturing institutions that support industry Reinforcing the innovation culture Page 6

The Phases of the Product Lifecycle Productdesign Production planning Production engineering Production execution Service The benefits of integration stretch across the value chain. Page 11

Unifying the Product and Production Lifecycle Processes PRODUCT PRODUCTION yesterday today tomorrow Process Serial and separate lifecycles, software for isolated functions Software speeds lifecycles, but processes still mainly serial Concurrent processes, lifecycles unified Plan Develop Build Support time time time Page 12

The Automotive Industry Example Product Design Production Planning Production Engineering Production Execution Service Page 13

BMW Real-World Example TIA Portal Highly attractive software tools for customers Unique long-term commitment (15 years) PLC hardware, engineering and visualization based on TIA Portal in all plants worldwide BMW Expanding in the United States Spartanburg, SC, will become largest production site in world Expansion will increase plant s capacity 50 percent by 2016 Plant will begin to produce a new, large crossover vehicle Page 14

Dramatic Changes in Process Industries Making Data Work with COMOS Better quality decision-making throughout the plant s entire lifecycle Seamless flow of engineering information based on a globally consistent database end-to-end, across all disciplines and all phases of the plant lifecycle Access at all times to information that is always up to date in real time, independent of time zones Page 15

Novartis Example Worldwide standardization in engineering using COMOS Better quality decision-making throughout the plant s entire lifecycle Increased productivity Increased efficiency Higher flexibility Internal studies show we have achieved engineering savings of between 8 and 12% by using COMOS software.
