2 Description ETI*Extract FX is a set of software productivity tools that: Automates the writing of programs that: Retrieve the data needed from any system Transform it Load it into any other system Constructs and maintains data warehouses Building an effective data warehouse commonly requires consolidating data from multiple applications and data stores. Using ETI*Extract FX, users can generate custom programs to access: Any popular database engine Hierarchical or networked databases Specialized application structures like SAP It can efficiently automate: Data extraction Transformation Movement Loading Providing robust metadata for: -- Technical administrators -- End users Addresses the cost of maintenance with impact analysis and the capacity to easily adapt to database changes Implements SAP, Baan, A. G. Edwards, and PeopleSoft, all of which can be fed by other applications Data bridged between applications often requires reformatting and merging. ETI*Extract FX simplifies operations like migrating legacy data to new database systems, architectures, and formats, including client/server and year Allows processing workload to be shared between the server and the clients Makes all users client-enabled Increases flexibility Brings the power of distributed processing to enterprise data management Enables users to configure the product to meet their needs Allows users to mix and match hardware platforms and reduce hardware costs Server operating systems can be either UNIX or Windows NT Client operating systems can be UNIX, Windows NT, or Windows 95 or Windows 98 ETI*Extract FX supports host-based use via X-windows and client/server use. With a client/server configuration, a copy of MetaStore can be obtained from a server for stand-alone use. Previously, ETI s components were grouped into tool sets with master user and conversion specialist users who could use only certain editors. With ETI*Extract FX, all editors are available to all users. The distinction between master users and conversion specialists is eliminated. Individual client users can obtain a copy of the MetaStore and work remotely or stand-alone. Existing ETI*EXTRACT users can move to ETI*Extract FX without losing productivity. Features of ETI*Extract FX include: GUI and spreadsheet-like point-and-click screens that enable intuitive source-to-target data mapping and transformation specifications Automatic generation of all necessary programs, JCL, and execution scripts to process end-to-end, bidirectional data conversion and migration, reducing development cost and speeding application development Easy programming regeneration that reduces application and data warehouse maintenance cost The ability to: Physically move data directly between source and target platforms to provide efficient processing for scalable implementations Handle virtually any type or volume of data, which allows users to leverage any and all data in their applications Supports direct access and manipulation of data in COBOL or C languages, using: Database applications such as: -- DB2 -- IMS -- Oracle -- Informix -- Sybase -- SAP -- Teradata Most operating systems, including: -- MVS -OS/ AS/ Windows NT -- UNIX file -- System files such as VSAM Comprehensive, flexible, and automated metadata capture and capabilities that include versioning and reporting The ability to specify all data handling logic and business coding standards within the tool, which can virtually eliminate the need for any manual coding ETI*Extract FX Components Clients: A simple point-and-click screen enables even nonprogrammers to specify complex data manipulation instructions. Features include: Creates programs and scripts in a variety of languages such as COBOL, C, and SAP s ABAP/4 that can run on virtually any type of source or target platform regardless of the operating system. Captures automatically all of the information about data collection, conversion, and movement of the metadata for a detailed audit trail providing metadata management and metadata about metadata, with the ETI*Extract FX MetaStore database

3 Includes interactive editing tools to define the computing environment to tailor and extend the data collection and conversion instructions as needed For example, you can tailor the templates so that generated programs match the coding and naming standards of an organization. ETI*Extract FX Data System Library (DSL): DSL consists of parameters such as: Legal datatypes Retrieve schema mechanism Templates Grammars Features: Instructs ETI*Extract FX software how to generate programs for data bridging to or from a specific database access system or file structure Determines the programming language used, enabling the ETI*Extract FX tools to generate programs and control scripts like: JCL and C-shell Execution scripts Reports The ETI*Extract FX tools need only the DSLs for: Specific environments that are the sources for query and data collection Environments that need to be populated with collected and converted data ETI*Extract FX DSLs currently available are: Category 1 -- COBOL/DB2 -- C/Oracle -- COBOL/File System -- SAP R/3 Category 2 -- COBOL/IMS -- C/Informix -- C/Sybase -- C/File System -- C/Teradata Servers: MetaStore databases reside on the servers and contain the DSLs and conversions that the client users create. The servers also contain the licensing component that allows users to access the client editors. ETI*Impact Analyst Add-on Products Evaluates the impact of potential changes on database and data conversion projects before they are made Exports all or part of the metadata captured by ETI*Extract FX to a relational database Quickly identifies all instances of an item used in a conversion or across multiple conversions Runs your packaged reports included with ETI*Impact Analyst or add your own reports to execute what-if scenarios on metadata These what-if scenarios can include questions such as: Following conversion chains, what will be affected by changing the value of this source part? and Which conversions use this schema as a source system? ETI*MetaScheduler for the Visual Warehouse: ETI*MetaScheduler, formerly Meta Transport Utility, integrates ETI*Extract FX with Visual Warehouse to allow Visual Warehouse to: Manage the execution of the ETI*Extract FX-generated programs necessary to maintain a warehouse Display the metadata audit trail available from ETI*Extract FX Features: Supports the scheduling of conversions Visual Warehouse can act as the central scheduling console for ETI*Extract FX-generated programs by importing a new execution plan generated by ETI*Extract FX. This plan describes the series of programs that perform the conversion. Programs within a single data conversion are imported as cascading business view relationships and run serially by Visual Warehouse. You can also schedule execution of programs in parallel. Visual Warehouse can read the message and error files created by ETI*Extract FX programs to gather status information. The data warehouse administrator monitors the status of the ETI*Extract FX program via the Visual Warehouse operations panel. Visual Warehouse then displays information such as program start and end time. Enables the ETI*Extract FX static metadata: Includes control language for the Visual Warehouse Scheduler Sends to Visual Warehouse via the Metadata Coalition s metadata interchange Static metadata is information about the: Format of the data warehouse (the schema) Sources of the data Transformations applied in loading the data This information corresponds to ETI*Extract FX conversion specifications and schemas, including: Source and target databases Joins Mappings Target part filters Annotations These add-on products are backward-compatible with existing ETI*EXTRACT products. This Visual Warehouse integration requires the following: ETI*EXTRACT Release 3.3.1, or later Visual Warehouse Version 3.1.1, or later ETI*MetaScheduler for Visual Warehouse Version 1.1.0, or later DSLs Year 2000 This is a third-party product, not an IBM product.
