Today As compute, storage, and network technologies continue to evolve the demand to move toward "always on anywhere" availability of operating environments is ever increasing yet Business Continuance continues to be a CIO discretionary line item which continues to receive budget scrutiny. The need to move production workloads routinely between Site A and Site B to validate operational readiness and help with justification is ever increasing. The already grey lines between Production compute cycles and DR compute cycles are rapidly disappearing. The ation s are driving much of this change with dramatically increasing accelerated adoption rates in Server, Storage, Network, Consolidation, Virtualization, Optimization strategies. Test/Dev now fully production.. Technologies such as active archiving, data de-dupe, thin provisioning, Information Lifecycle Management, WAN Acceleration, dual/re-purposing, Cloud, P2V, COD and pay by the drip, Greening, and many other techniques are all helping exploit, create, and increase program value. 5 Recover Lifecycle Management - Framework Recovery Lifecycle Management (RLM) is a framework for operationalizing and aligning your business needs with the IT infrastructure based on information's changing availability value. It s a responsible combination of people, process, and technology. RLM, enables you to exploit Recovery program value at every point in its lifecycle. 6 3

Recovery Lifecycle Management (RLM) It s What is Recovery Lifecycle Management ( RLM )? Establishing Business Continuity as an operational mindset Building Business Continuity into daily operational activities A operational plan to assure business processes are updated, maintained, and communicated as Standard Operating Procedures A responsible combination of people, process, and technology It isn t A specific product, technology, or technique An annual BC Plan update & annual DR Test A BCDR project with a beginning and an end Just Business Continuity, Disaster recovery or High-Availability 7 What s driving the need for an RLM approach? Business Requirements Corporate Governance Growing regulations Competitive advantage Quality, efficiency& dependence on supply chain ERM and Credit ratings impact Changing Business Values/Needs Business Models Reliance on IT (7 x 24 operations) Planned downtime no longer acceptable Smaller recovery windows SLA penalties Resilient operations Business Protection Revenue Goodwill Productivity Employee morale Fines and penalties Due diligence Brand Reputation 8 4

9 Today s Business Drivers Impact Infrastructure GLOBALIZATION Customers and suppliers are everywhere and someone is always working RESOURCES Human and technology and brick and mortar MOBILITY OF WORKFORCE AND DATA System availability and continuity is global OPERATIONALIZE Continuity and high availability are steady state THE AGILITY OF BUSINESS Change is the steady state If you re BC plans are not continuously updated they will NEVER be current when you need them..the ONLY way to accomplish that is Recover Lifecycle Management 10 5

Recovery Lifecycle Management Framework RLM guiding principles The adaptive environment is the next step beyond resiliency. It is not just improved infrastructure, but the convergence of the organization in it's entirety. It s a framework that allows you to align and manage ever changing technology and business requirements in a proactive manner. Maturing your existing Business Continuance program should be a strategic long term vision for aligning your IT infrastructure with the needs of your business based on the needs of business and their changing values. A mature program should not be a project with a stop and a start but an ongoing mindset. As your program evolves it should evaluate your applications, data, and supporting infrastructure against your service levels and business requirements. It should include a business service requirements model, reference architecture model, ongoing gap analysis, application alignment, implementation roadmap, and cost impact analysis. The final result is an actionable model that aligns your business requirements to architecture for the purposes of maximizing operational readiness and information value while mitigating risk in a cost-effective manner. By inserting program rigor (,, ) and routinely analyzing business functions, these services help you reduce risk and lower cost while providing the right levels of service to your business. Through this approach you get the most value from your information, at the lowest TCO, at every point in the Recovery Lifecycle. 11 Recover Lifecycle Management - Framework Recovery Lifecycle Management (RLM) is a framework for operationalizing and aligning your business needs with the IT infrastructure based on information's changing availability value. It s a responsible combination of people, process, and technology. RLM, enables you to exploit Recovery program value at every point in its lifecycle. Framework Components The goal with this section is to communicate best practice elements enabling you to establish a successful RLM program Components developed are based on Industry best practice experience and customer case studies. 12 6

Business IT 13 Recover Lifecycle Management - Framework are a key component and your most important asset to a successful Recovery Lifecycle Management program. Alignment and support across your enterprise is critical. Establish a BCDR team within each functional silo (Business & IT) Coordinate with HR to include BCDR responsibilities including estimated time expectations in your formal Job Descriptions. Offer internal training certifications and/or opportunity to get industry certifications to the extended team. Hold regular team meetings, team building activities, and provide regular industry communications. A successful, well establish RLM program requires executive and appropriate management sponsorship. 14 7

Recover Lifecycle Management - Framework is a fundamental framework element that enables a successful RLM transformation effort. Program rigor, operational readiness, Business and IT alignment and collaboration are essential. Application design must have BC/DR built into the inherent design architecture to ensure that Business is properly aligned with IT. Change Management must be rationalized to ensure the integrity of off cycle changes made to the production are proactively maintained, exposures are proactively eliminated at the point of change the bi-product of these is operational readiness. Maintaining constant ongoing communications programs and ongoing awareness campaigns are integral to creating, demonstrating, and enhancing true program value. Demonstrating continuous program improvement with documented program progress through rigorous and aggressive Testing /Exercising and reporting is key to increasing program value. 15 Recover Lifecycle Management - IT the Good Old Days Network MF Storage Terminals Business Units Application A Application B IT es Service Management Incident Management Change Management and Configuration Management = EASY 16 8

Recover Lifecycle Management - infrastructure should be viewed as critical to implementing a successful RLM program. A successful Recovery Lifecycle Management Program (RLM) requires a transformation to an Adaptive Environment what does that mean? 19 Recover Lifecycle Management - The Adaptive Definition verb to make suitable to requirements or conditions; adjust or modify fittingly: They adapted themselves to the change quickly. He adapted the novel for movies. to adjust oneself to different conditions, environment, etc.: to adapt easily to all circumstances. - people to shift IT resources to any circumstance at will, based on business operation impact. process & technology to build resiliency into the environment to withstand error, shifting workloads, upgrade or disaster. tools to proactively measure and balance outcomes of element failure

Recover Lifecycle Management - infrastructure should be viewed as critical to implementing a successful RLM program. 12 Recover Lifecycle Management - Risk Tools What do these tools provide us that we didn t have before? The following is an example of PROACTIVE environment management. These tools identify the inability to meet recovery objectives PROACTIVELY on a daily/weekly basis limiting off cycle exposure. These type tools will tell us what s NOT recoverable based on changes to the environment and will also help us identify, organize and manage activities around risk on a single platform. 23 RecoverGuard Maximizing Your DR investments 24 12
