Hardware Oriented Applications of SEER-IT SEER User Conference

SEER Suite of Applications Different products for different domains SEER-SEM software/application development, integration and testing SEER-H system and hardware design, development, production and support SEER-MFG hardware manufacturing SEER-IT IT infrastructure and services Estimates deployment and support of IT services plus more Designed to compliment SEER-H and SEER-SEM Can be used in combination to estimate many types of systems 2

Evolving SEER-H Applications Traditionally, SEER-H uses include things such as: Aircraft airframes, avionics, UAV, structural components Spacecraft bus, payload, sensors Ground systems radars, communications, sensors, simulators Ship systems Missiles Most of these types of systems today are interconnected creating *Systems of Systems* This interconnection is generally based in information technology concepts networks, data collection/retrieval, decision support, standard interfaces, etc. SEER-IT is what you can use to estimate the IT based interconnection of systems 3

SEER for IT Functional Process Models aka WBS elements Each process model has a set of inputs, calculations and outputs Process Models provide logical groupings of IT activities An IT project will typically use a combination of WBS elements

Network Centric Systems Systems used for Network Centric Warfare Information sharing among system sensors, battlefield, and control centers IT oriented systems used to support information Many architectures and many levels of complexity, but key components typically include: Hardware usually COTS Software a mix of COTS and custom, usually using SOA Security Standard Interfaces/Procedures Often involves interconnections for systems of systems How to estimate? Break it down 6

Estimation can cover a mix of approaches Systems Engineering Development Implementation Ongoing Support SEER-IT SOA Services SEER-SEM SEER-IT SEER-SEM / SEER-IT COTS Software SEER-IT SEER-IT COTS Hardware SEER-IT SEER-IT Custom Hardware System Training System Documentation SEER-H SEER-H/SEER- IT SEER-IT SEER-IT SEER-H SEER-IT SEER-IT Repositories SEER-SEM SEER-IT SEER-IT Security SEER-SEM SEER-IT SEER-IT Facilities SEER-IT SEER-IT 7

Fielding of NCS needs to be included in an estimate Planning for deployment (aka fielding, implementation) Procurement of COTS Configuring development and production systems Test/QA/Checkout of fielded systems Preparation of training and documentation 8

Operational Support of NCS Operational Support of NCS is similar to supporting an IT enterprise System administrators, database administrators, support technicians, and management of the operation Often called IT services, infrastructure services, IT service management, or ongoing support These are not the end-users of the system Drivers to consider 9

SEER-IT Estimation Example 10

Key components in this example Cost estimate for implementation and support of enterprise services required to be developed and supported for a Network Centric ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) system called CabNet. Four main components CabNet Systems Engineering Deployment & Support of the CabNet Enterprise Services Core CabNet Data Center Hardware & Related Services Remote CabNet Configuration Development and integration of the CabNet SOA software suite of applications estimated by SEER-SEM. Procurement & integration of platform specific sensors and equipment estimated by SEER-H. 11

Systems Engineering Estimated with the SEER-IT Architecture/Design element Uses the COSYSMO model to estimate SE effort Key Scoping Drivers 12

Enterprise Services Deployment of services estimated with the SEER-IT Software/Database Services element Covers all the effort associated with implementing software services, enterprise applications (COTS or custom) and databases 13

Infrastructure Systems (Hardware) Deployment of key network systems estimated with the SEER-IT Infrastructure Services element Covers all the effort associated with setup, configuration, test and checkout of servers, network equipment, firewalls 14

Other Hardware Workstations, and other equipment estimated with End User Services Covers effort for implementation, test and checkout of all end-user computing equipment Setup and installation of voice/data lines estimated with Facilities 15

Purchased Costs SEER-IT provides several ways to include purchased costs Purchased items database may be populated with data from vendor purchasing agreements 16

Custom Hardware in a NCS Custom hardware is best estimated with SEER-H E.g. sensors, radars, antennas If desired, SEER-H estimates may be brought into the SEER-IT estimate via Additional Items 17

Results in many formats Available by year, month, labor category, phase 18

Automated Toll Collection System Network Connection Central Data Center EZ Pass Accounts User Mgmt 19

Estimating the Toll Collection System SEER-H For estimating design of custom components such as detectors, road sensors, RF components, ASICs Specialized hardware integration such as developing a weather resistant housing for a COTS camera SEER-SEM For estimated embedded software related to the sensors, cameras or RFID systems Custom applications or software interfaces to manage accounts, collect fees, or other operations related requirements SEER-IT For estimating IT related costs and systems engineering Can serve as the integrator for SEER-SEM and SEER-H estimates 20

SEER-IT Many systems involve a multi-disciplinary approach to estimating SEER for IT is a powerful tool in bridging these types of estimates SEER-IT is designed to compliment the estimates generated with SEER-SEM and SEER-H SEER for IT is adept at estimating the cost, schedule, effort risk of systems which use IT 21
