3 Turning challenges into profits Modern industry is facing increasingly tough conditions. Produce more with fewer resources. Increase quality and lower the costs. Adapt to the ever-changing needs of the market. Or disappear. What s more even with today s technologically sophisticated plants, companies lose millions of dollars in unplanned interruptions. And many times, it could have been avoided. Here s where IFS enters the picture. With our enterprise asset management solutions, we help companies all over the world increase availability, productivity and profitability. In this booklet, you ll see some examples of exactly that. We hope you find it inspirational.

5 A SEA OF OPPORTUNITIES If you re a leading international offshore drilling contractor, operating in extreme conditions all over the world, you can t be limited by your EAM system. Especially not considering that interruptions in your operations can cost a half a million dollars a day. So when SeaDrill realized that its solution for maintenance, logistics and procurement was too limited and vulnerable, a major procurement process began. SeaDrill needed a powerful asset management solution that could be integrated with its finance system, providing accurate information while also reducing the risk of interruptions. And so, IFS Applications was chosen not least because of our experience and our local presence. Rationalizing maintenance in an organization largely based at sea is, however, no easy task. But the key is communication, and with IFS portal technology and a satellite connection, SeaDrill has proven that it can be done. 7 7 20,000 MEGAWATTS OF INFORMATION NHPC Ltd. one of the top-ten companies in India in terms of investment plans, promotes and organizes development of hydroelectric, geothermal, tidal and wind power. With a vision to become the leader in the use of information technology by 2012, and a plan to increase its generation capacity to 20,000 MW by 2017, NHPC Ltd. decided to implement a new ERP system across the entire organization. That means on all project locations, power plants and, of course, the head office. A huge project by any standards, and it s already safe to say it s been a very successful one too. It began in 2007, when the contract was signed with IFS, in part because we could offer our own set of software specially developed for the energy sector. By implementing IFS Applications, NHPC Ltd. creates a single database covering all critical business processes. The wide range of components will be implemented in three phases, and by 2012 the complete solution will be used by more than 10,000 users. By the looks of it, that vision for 2012 is soon to be realized. NHPC Ltd. NHPC Ltd. PLANS, PROMOTES AND ORGANIZES DEVELOPMENT OF HYDROELECTRIC, GEOTHERMAL, TIDAL AND WIND POWER

9 THE POWER OF EVOLUTION Like so many other companies that have gone through mergers, acquisitions and organizational changes, Hafslund ASA Norway s largest power distributor had an array of different business systems. What it needed was a common ERP solution supporting its new and hugely successful operations. The shortlist included several major global suppliers, and in the end IFS was the only one left for reasons such as functionality, our utilities experience, and good references. With the new, common IT infrastructure, Hafslund ASA has been able to streamline its business processes and dramatically improve efficiency. Faster, more accurate reporting and the ability to manage critical work processes have not only enabled major savings in time and money. They have also allowed the company to reallocate resources to improve its customer service. Now that s what we mean by the power of evolution. To become the leader, you need to keep growing. But to grow, you ve got to stay agile. Just like Hafslund ASA. HAFSLUND ASA HAFSLUND ASA IS NORWAY S LARGEST POWER DISTRIBUTOR, PLAYING A MAJOR ROLE IN THE SECURITY SERVICES AND CONTRACTING MARKET

11 HYDROPOWER IS ALL ABOUT BUSINESS FLOWS Located on the Yangtze River in central China, Three Gorges is the largest hydropower plant on the planet. In 2002, the aim being to adopt best practices and manage the plant s assets as efficiently as possible, IFS Applications was selected out of five large ERP vendors. The rich functionality, open framework and objectoriented technology of IFS Applications, as well as our long experience from utilities, were some of the major reasons. And it s safe to say that the goals were met. With an ERP solution streamlining all its business processes, Three Gorges is run incredibly efficiently. And just like the flow of water, the flow of information creates some wonderful possibilities. THREE GORGES HYDROPOWER PLANT THREE GORGES, LOCATED IN CHINA, IS THE LARGEST HYDROPOWER IN THE WORLD

13 IF YOU WORK WITH STEEL, YOU NEED TO BE FLEXIBLE For any asset intensive industry, an efficient EAM solution is often the key to profitability. Such is also the case for SSAB, a world-leading supplier of high-strength steel. SSAB s facilities in Borlänge and Luleå, Sweden, have been IFS users since 1997 continuously developing its EAM solutions to support its maintenance intensive operations. After a successful upgrade to IFS Applications 7 in 2009, introducing identical business solutions to both plants, the conditions are in place for even greater savings and visibility. For instance, by implementing the IFS ebuyer application, SSAB s sheet steel division has been able to streamline its purchasing processes. Of course, by facilitating common work processes, IFS Applications 7 also makes everyday life easier for all its users. And with the two plants totaling some 1,500 users, you can imagine what that means for productivity. SSAB SSAB IS A LEADING GLOBAL SUPPLIER OF HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL, WITH EMPLOYEES IN 45 COUNTRIES

15 LESS PAPERWORK, MORE PULP SCA Graphic Sundsvall or, more specifically, Ortvikens paper mill and Östrands pulp mill, know just what a good EAM system can do for productivity. Having been IFS Applications users since the mid-nineties, the company had experienced a continuous increase in efficiency by implementing new processes supporting productivity. One important step was taken in 2006, when an upgrade of IFS Applications enabled the company to implement a more user-friendly analysis tool, MaxOEE, for measuring productivity. Integrated with IFS Applications and the plant s work order system, MaxOEE provides a complete overall view of the plant just what you need to make the right strategic and operational decisions. But that s not all. SCA Graphic Sundsvall has also benefited from enhanced cost control and increased efficiency through automated invoicing. All this, and more with less paperwork.
