13 1 Farming at its best: Smart Solutions, Healthy Business The Challenge Simfony s client, a preeminent presence in the global farming sector, observes that the livestock has drastically decreased due to poor health and living conditions. Furthermore, there was a lack of control and supervision over farming facilities and resources. In order to make the right decisions, manager needs an amount of data regarding some specific aspects. Key Tools After an in-depth discussion with the client, the solution used was LoRA, a local radio network which allows monitoring various parameters in a wide geographic area, with low power consumption, without building an expensive infrastructure. Sensors were installed to monitor and measure various parameters around the farm and transmit data in real time. The IoT platform collected real time actionable data from the sensors, triggering alarms or storing the data for future review. At the same time, dashboard and analytics became available to create historic reviews. Results in facts and figures Losses cut by 50% due to improved livestock health and better decision making. 15 3 A true story of turning failure into success Early 2016: we put the IoT platform to a first test. The client company, one of the largest players in the Romanian vending sector wanted to find out: is cashless vending a profitable approach? Three months later: everything was in place and purchases were ready to be made via SMS. Thanks to the platform s flexibility, the project was implemented at a fraction of the cost usually involved when building something from scratch. Bonus, as insights were gathered, the project was adjusted in real time. The real time monitoring permitted not only SMS payments, but also created substantial reports on how the machines are used and how consumers behave. By the end of the trial, the company was able to make an informed decision: the collected data showed that, in average, around 10% of the customers were willing to use SMS payments. Although other areas had better results, a large scale deployment was considered not opportune at this time. Thus, they saved precious time and money. Clever, right?
