1 Meet your peak on demand business requirements with orchestration IBM Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator Highlights Anticipates and triggers the Helps protect technology investments by orchestrating the response to fluctuating datacenter production requirements allocation of your existing hardware, software and network in real time and in accordance with your business priorities devices to deliver added efficiency and high availability through extended sensing, understanding and intelligence capabilities Supports orchestration of grid, distributed application environments or both Helps minimize costs, optimize server utilization and boost server-to-administrator ratios by Provides access to the IBM automating the steps necessary Orchestration and Provisioning to provision, configure and Automation Library, where you manage a complete production can access the tools and community you need to help build your solution business around on demand automation Allows specific resources to be reserved and scheduled for provisioning and deployment Build an on demand infrastructure with orchestration software Your customers require your enterprise to be an on demand business. But can your infrastructure support it? As more applications become integrated into value chains that extend from the core of your business out to the edges and beyond, more applications are burdened with higher service level expectations and unpredictable spikes in demand. If you want to build an on demand enterprise, you need an on demand infrastructure. One that can respond to fluctuating demands and unexpected outages while increasing your efficiency and effectiveness and reducing costs. IBM Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator software helps you deal with these challenges. It helps you minimize your costs by optimizing server utilization

2 This screen shot demonstrates the status of applications and servers under the control of Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator. The Oregon and Delaware servers are dedicated to the self-serve banking application full time (indicated by their icons). Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator automatically adds the third server (ibm-p660-1) to the application, due to high utilization across the two original servers. However, utilization is still too high across these three servers. and server-to-administrator ratios. It does this by anticipating and automatically responding to change. First it monitors, models and predicts changes in demand for IT resources. Then it orchestrates the provisioning of servers, operating systems, middleware, applications, storage and network devices (such as firewalls, routers, switches and load balancers) to satisfy those requirements within your business policies and priorities. It utilizes your existing hardware, software and network devices, allowing you to minimize implementation time and disruption and attain a fast return on investment. In response to this high utilization, Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator has begun to automatically add a fourth server to the application cluster. The hourglass icon next to the server name indicates that this server is being added to the cluster. Put your computing power where you need it most With Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator, you can evolve into an on demand enterprise and meet high performance and availability service levels responsively and effectively. The new server has now been provisioned and begins to assume some of the processing. With the additional servers provisioned automatically by Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator, utilization of all servers in the cluster has fallen to acceptable levels. Many organizations ask their IT departments to maintain or increase application service levels in the face of increasing transaction loads and constrained budgets. Today, IT managers respond to growing service level expectations by 2

3 assuming worst-case, peak demands and overprovisioning resources. An expensive and inefficient method of IT resource allocation, just-in-case provisioning results in grossly underutilized servers. Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator software helps you constantly monitor service levels, anticipate resource requirements and automatically deploy resources to applications in need (in grid, distributed environments or both) based on your business priorities. Coordinate IT workflows to dynamically manage server availability Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator, which includes IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager software, captures your best practices in workflows to quickly and automatically deploy IT resources. Packaged workflows automate today s most common, repetitive manual resource deployment and configuration tasks. These workflows can be customized using a simple wizarddriven graphical user interface, which can capture your own best practices and IT processes. These personalized workflows help you: Automate existing data-center best practices. Minimize human error. Optimize server utilization and business service levels. Respond quickly to new business requirements and unplanned market changes. In addition, IBM helps you get started by providing access to IBM Orchestration and Provisioning Automation Library, where you can access the tools and community you need to build your business around on demand automation. Extend provisioning management capabilities Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator extends the benefits of Tivoli Provisioning Manager by anticipating production requirements and allocating capacity to meet them. By monitoring applications under its control, Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator predicts near-term resource requirements and instructs Tivoli Provisioning Manager to deploy the capacity necessary to meet service level requirements. In addition, Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator helps you: Optimize resource allocation based on the relative application importance. Dynamically respond to unplanned resource requirements as defined by your business policy. Reserve and schedule the provisioning and deployment of resources for planned projects; if resources are unavailable to service a high-priority application, the system can commandeer resources from the lowest-priority application. Implement at your own pace Becoming an on demand, automated environment is a gradual evolution. Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator offers multiple modes of operation for the execution of resource deployments manual (user-initiated), semiautomatic (orchestrator-initiated, user authorization required) or automatic (orchestratorinitiated and authorized) modes. These multiple modes of operation can be applied globally or in a very fine granular manner, allowing an evolutionary approach to automation and orchestration of your IT environment. 3

4 Use shared server pools to meet peak demands Many industries have benefited from just-in-time resource management principles for their critical business processes. Orchestration brings these principles to the provisioning of your IT infrastructure. For example, consider a financial institution with three applications: Online trading application supporting morning demand peaks as the market opens Branch bank teller application supporting lunch demand peaks as customers enter retail branch banks Home-banking application on the Web supporting late-evening peak demand With dedicated resources, as one application s resources strain to meet service levels, the other two applications have underutilized resources. With Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator software, all three financial applications are allocated what they need when they need it from a shared server resource pool. Fewer servers are required to meet the individual application demand peaks, because none of the applications is independently overprovisioned. And because the best-practice workflows can configure server, software, storage and network components in each application environment, resource allocation is optimized without sacrificing performance or disrupting the fault and security isolation between applications or application tiers. Get more out of your IT resources through on demand automation The on demand automation capabilities of Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator software provide: Dynamic deployment dynamically moves servers between resource pools and application environments (distributed, grid or both). Your data center s best practices execute automatically, coordinating the configuration of IT resources. Resource optimization analyzes requirements of the application environments it manages and optimizes overall resource allocation. Rapid recovery detects failed servers and executes automated processes to provision replacement servers dynamically from resource pools or less-critical application environments. Capitalize on software that works with what you have installed Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator comes with predefined best practices for products from most major technology vendors, including IBM, HP, Sun, BEA, Microsoft, Cisco, Citrix, F5, Alteon and Foundry Networks. Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator enables dynamic scaling of many clustered middleware technologies such as IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic, Microsoft Application Server and Citrix MetaFrame. It also supports open-standards platforms such as Linux. Customizable best practices and open interfaces like Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Secure Shell (SSH), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Java Management Extensions (JMX) and XML help Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator software smoothly integrate with the systems you have in place today and the ones you may implement in the future. The result: an unobtrusive orchestration solution designed for low total cost of ownership. Orchestrating your infrastructure today can optimize server utilization, enhance your ability to handle real-time changes in workloads to meet service levels and automate processes to allocate your IT infrastructure while saving costs. You can start with a single project and expand at your own pace toward an on demand infrastructure. 4
