THE FUTURE OF REPORTING Transition to GRI Standards 6 April 2017 Tamara Bergkamp, Manager, Reporting Standards

Introduction

The GRI Standards The set of GRI Standards includes: 3 universal Standards, applicable to all organizations 33 topic-specific Standards, organized into Economic, Environmental, and Social series Organizations select and use only the relevant topicspecific Standards, based on their material topics The Standards will be required for all reports or other materials published on or after 1 July 2018 earlier adoption is encouraged. The G4 Guidelines remain in effect until this date. 11

Two basic approaches for using the GRI Standards Preparing a report in accordance with the Standards Using selected GRI Standards The GRI Standards are designed primarily to be used together to prepare a report in accordance with the Standards This signals that the Reporting Principles have been applied, and that the organization has identified and reported on all material topics Core and Comprehensive options from G4 continue (with minor changes due to the new structure) Selected Standards can also be used to report specific information This is called a GRI-referenced claim and must clearly reference which Standards or sections have been used Using the GRI Standards requires including a specific claim in all published materials, and notifying GRI of the use of the Standards. See section 3 of GRI 101: Foundation. 12

New features and improvements

Summary of new features and improvements compared to G4 New modular structure New format with clearer requirements Content clarifications Greater flexibility and transparency in how to use the Standards Overall editing The Standards are now organized as a set of modular, interrelated standards The new format has clear distinctions between requirements (indicated by shall ), recommendations ( should ) and guidance Key concepts from G4 have been clarified to improve understanding and application of the Standards For organizations preparing a report in accordance with the Standards as well as those using selected Standards to report specific information Content from G4 has been edited for greater clarity and simpler language 14

The modular set of GRI Standards 15

Revised terminology Some G4 terminology has been simplified: indicator disclosure (covers both qualitative and quantitative disclosures) Aspect topic (refers to all topics, whether covered by the GRI Standards or not) disclosures on management approach (DMA) management approach disclosures employee / worker terminology review Definitions for employee and worker have been slightly revised Duplicative and overlapping terms have been removed (e.g., supervised worker, total workforce) In some cases a specific subset of workers is denoted in the text. Most changes relate to recommendations or guidance, not disclosures (see Mapping G4 to the GRI Standards for more detail) 16

GRI 101: Universal Standards

The modular set of GRI Standards 20

GRI 101: Foundation This is the starting point for using the GRI Standards Three main sections: Section 1: Reporting Principles Section 2: Using the GRI Standards for sustainability reporting Section 3: Making claims related to the use of the GRI Standards Also includes a new Introduction with background on sustainability reporting and information about how to use the Standards, as well as a Key Terms section 21

GRI 101: Foundation Section 1: Reporting Principles Includes the ten Principles for defining report content and quality Principles are consistent with G4, although it has been clarified that they are required ( shall statements) Guidance for some Principles has been revised and clarified 22

GRI 101: Foundation Section 2: Using the GRI Standards for sustainability reporting Sets out the basic steps for using the GRI Standards to prepare a sustainability report, including: How to identify and report on material topics even if not covered by the GRI Standards How to present information and use references to other sources of information 23

GRI 101: Foundation Section 3: Making claims related to the use of the GRI Standards Covers how to use and reference the Standards, including: Requirements to claim a report is in accordance with the Standards (Core and Comprehensive options) Requirements for using selected Standards to report specific information The specific claims (statements of use) to be included in all published materials Using reasons for omission Notifying GRI of the use of the Standards 24

What s new or clarified compared to G4?

Content clarifications overview Clarifications have been provided for some key G4 concepts, including: The definition of impacts as related to materiality Using the GRI Sector Disclosures to identify material topics Reporting on other material topics (not covered by the GRI Standards) Required explanations when using reasons for omission Notifying GRI of the use of the Standards Identifying and reporting the concept of topic boundary How to report on topics if the Boundary extends outside the organization Use of employee / worker terminology Found in GRI 101: Foundation Also found in GRI 103: Management Approach Found in selected content throughout the Standards 26 26

What s new or clarified compared to G4? Use of the 10 Principles: each principle is a requirement Use of Sector Disclosures: now recommended (not required), to help identify material topics Reporting on Boundaries: it has been clarified to report them for each material topic Options to use and reference the Standards: - Core and Comprehensive: basic requirements are the same, but some criteria has been clarified (see Table 1 in GRI 101) - Using selected Standards (with a GRI referenced claim): more flexibility allowed, but with specific requirements on how to reference the Standards - Claims (statements of use): now more prescriptive, with set wording to be included in all reports or other materials Notifying GRI of the use of the Standards: now more explicit that this is required 27

Definition of impacts as related to materiality

GRI 101 What s new or clarified? Clarification of impacts as related to materiality Impacts refers to effects on the economy, the environment, and/or society (does not focus on impacts on the organization) Applying the Materiality principle requires this understanding of impacts This clarification is consistent with G4, but this was sometimes mis-understood Figure 3- Visual representation of prioritization of topics Other dimensions, such as relevance for business, can still be considered but cannot replace altogether the two dimensions in the principle 29

Clarification of materiality additional guidance The GRI Standards are designed to help organizations communicate about their impacts on the economy, the environment, and society and thus how they contribute towards the goal of sustainable development This purpose is distinct but complementary to frameworks like SASB, IIRC, and CDP that are designed primarily for the information needs of the investor community (and therefore focus mainly on risks & opportunities for the business) Refer to the Introduction of GRI 101: Foundation and the GRI website for more information 30
