4 RETRANSFER TECHNOLOGY Innovative retransfer printing technology maintains consistent, superlative print quality by printing separate layers of cyan, magenta, yellow, black and/or a spot color on transparent retransfer material, then transferring the composite image to the card using heat and an adhesive. This process allows for true over-the-edge printing, and is ideal for smart card issuance as retransfer printing easily accommodates the irregularities in the card surface (such as the contact chip) while maintaining print quality. Card Stock Retransfer Material Yellow Magenta Cyan Black Unique Image On-Demand Retransfer Printing Advantages Faster Time to Market: Bring high-quality, full-color designs to market dramatically faster than with traditional lithography. Flexible Card Options: Print on a wide range of card types, with contact or contactless smart chips, or onto cards with irregular surfaces. Eliminate Costly Pre-Printed Inventory: Particularly valuable when managing the EMV transition; small on-demand runs of EMV cards eliminate the need for large overhead investments of pre-printed cards. 6 DIRECT-TO-CARD TECHNOLOGY Personalize cards with full-color images and text and near-edge-to-edge coverage using direct-to-card technologies that deliver exceptional consistency and print quality. Direct-to-card printing including monochrome graphics and dye diffusion thermal transfer printing technology (D2T2 printing) uses a thermal print head that brings three-color (Y, M, C) dye ribbons in direct contact with the card. As the most common process for full-color card personalization, D2T2 printing enables you to add your logo, cardholder photo or other graphical elements to pre-printed cards or start from scratch and turn blank white cards into colorful, branded, high-impact cards. Yellow Magenta Cyan Direct-to-Card Printing Advantages Exceptional Consistency: Reliable performance delivers high-quality cards in vibrant color again and again. Flexible Integration: Direct-to-card technology is designed to fit with a wide variety of Datacard systems. Highly Cost-effective: Low-cost supplies and high throughput delivers outstanding cost-per-card. 5

11 BEYOND PRINTING OTHER KEY FEATURES Datacard issuance systems offer a full range of personalization capabilities in addition to the printing technologies covered in this guide. While there are dozens of existing and emerging capabilities, the following represent some of the most common personalization technologies: Magnetic Stripe Encoding Datacard systems allow issuers to encode high- and low-coercivity magnetic stripe cards. The process is fast, secure and highly accurate. Smart Card Personalization As EMV chip technology becomes the global standard for credit and debit payment cards, issuers must consider its impact on various aspects of the issuance process. Datacard systems allow issuers to personalize both contact and contactless EMV chip cards, greatly increasing card security and functionality. Durability Durability is an important consideration in maintaining the appearance and life of a card. Depending on the application, intended lifespan and card use, Entrust Datacard offers a complete line of protective topcoats, overlays and laminates to meet your needs. Embossing and Indenting Classic embossing technologies add security to cards, making character alteration virtually impossible without clear evidence of tampering. Datacard systems utilize proven embossing technologies honed through more than 45 years of card personalization experience. Security Features Datacard instant issuance systems include state-of-the-art security features that meet Visa and MasterCard security standards and provide investment protection. Dual-control access to the card issuing system protects card stock, supplies and rejected cards. Sensitive data is protected from unauthorized interception during network transmission with SSL/TSL encryption. In addition, built-in card auditing features reduce the risk of fraud. 10

12 GLOSSARY CMYK Process The use of four colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to give the illusion of a wider range of colors Contact Chip An integrated circuit (IC) that requires contact (via contact plate) to exchange data with a reader or writer Contactless Chip An embedded internal circuit and antenna in a card substrate that can be read and encoded by devices in close proximity vs. direct contact Dye Diffusion Thermal Transfer A digital print process (D2T2 or dye sub ) that uses three- or four-color ribbons containing dyes Embossing A punch-and-die technology that alters cards by creating raised letters and characters EMV - An international standard for smart credit cards that have a built-in CPU chip Indent Printing A punch-and-die technology that alters cards by embedding letters and characters Instant Issuance The creation and distribution of cards, tokens and other documents in a branch or store location; also referred to as branch, onsite or distributed issuance Lamination The process of adhering protective layers (laminates) together, which requires a thermal adhesive or uses the natural properties of the polymer and the surface of a card (or other substrate) Lithography Often referred to as litho, this is a traditional printing process that employs printing presses and a protracted production process 11

13 Personalization The transfer of personal biographical data onto a customized plastic card, token or other document Pigment A colored material that tends to be insoluble in its vehicle (dyes are soluble); often more durable than a dye Retransfer A digital printing refinement where the image is first printed to a carrier material before being retransferred Topcoat A thin (generally, two- to three-micron thick) protective film on the outer surfaces of a card; cannot be removed intact, thus providing tamper evidence and over-the-edge coverage Topping Colored foil material applied to embossed characters during the card personalization process to make them easier to read and more attractive 12
