What About Technology for SH&E SH&E Use Of Technology Has Been Post-Incident Compliance Management Focused 7

Let s Take A Pause Most industrial stakeholders have a stated focus on the development of a strong Culture of Safety : Safety program standards, processes & protocols; Incident management and investigation; Compliance management / Certification management; Safety training standards & protocols; Due diligence / record keeping protocols; Instructor / CBT / LMS managed training processes; Most range from fairly developed to extensive to exceptional with a strong focus on the post incident due diligence; 8

Let s Ask the Question? Then Why Are the Results so Different? 9

Let s Ask Another Question? Why is Due Diligence Treated as a Separate Process? 10

How About This One? Shouldn t Good Due Diligence be that you ve done EVERYTHING you could have possibly done and if so isn t the due diligence then fundamentally accomplished? 11

What about SH&E Statistics? Why is it that over the last 10 years of statistics, very little has actually impacted the results agressively? If we re getting better at safety and more experienced then why are the results not noticeably improving? 12

Where is Our Focus? Are we actually focused on successfully changing the Culture of Safety or just playing with statistics? Are we actually focusing on the root causes or just playing with the symptoms? 13

In the End What is Compliance? Compliance is in fact the end result of a highly successful Culture of Safety 14

Culture of Safety Case For Change Industry Dynamics HSE Challenges PPE Complexity Increased pace of PPE Industry Consolidation Evolution from PPE products to Total Safety Solution Technology Industry drive to globalization, standardization and rationalization Increased pace and complexity of safety regulations worldwide HSSE knowledge resources scalability remains an issue Data aggregation needs reduces HSE time from focus on safety Lack of PPE global standards increase compliance & associated costs Difficulty in mapping PPE safety solutions to job function/tasks PPE & training from multiple vendors reduces productivity HSE Technology Inability to leverage integrated technologies impedes safety outcomes Disparate silos of data impedes HSSE visibility and measurability Crossing the innovation chasm viewed as risk rather than investment in safety 15

Industrial SH&E The Wish List Efficiency Controlled use to improve efficiency of supply/demand management Fit For Purpose Improvement in job function/task mapping to drive fit for purpose usage & reduce incidents Global Safety Manufacturing Partnership Consolidation Globalization Innovation Leveraging innovation & technology to improve safety outcomes by working closely with a global manufacturer Compliance Collaborative management with a smaller number of suppliers (Globalization) Improved compliance to the SH&E Control Framework 16

Leveraging The Wireless We all wear personal H2S monitors inside the refinery If one alarms, the person wearing it is supposed to report it immediately so we can take appropriate action. However, sometimes our behavior is that we ignore the alarm and keep working because we think we are safe. Then no one knows about the alarm until the monitor is plugged into the calibration unit and the alarms are automatically downloaded. We still find out about the alarm, but we have to work to determine who, when, where (especially where) and how long the individual was exposed. Most importantly, we have no way to protect a person who does not immediately report his or her alarm. How can technology help me? 41

Wireless Case For Change No way to know the location of all operators and hazards during an event in real time Portable gas detectors only alert the operator wearing the monitor alarms may be ignored or unreported No way to confirm an operator is safe or in a man down situation Identification of low level gas leaks is not always timely Budget & resources to maintain safety records, maintain asset base, ensure instrument uptime is restricted Desire to get more ROI on wireless infrastructure investment 42
