2 OVERVIEW Whether you are a project manager by title or you were just given the responsibility of managing a project from beginning to end, this course will provide the knowledge and skills to helps you be successful in that role. The course will cover a typical project management lifecycle from initiation to planning, to execution and control, and closing. It provides a general understanding of key processes in each of these stages as they may be utilized in managing projects in any industry, while offering examples that demonstrate their application in managing projects in the energy/utility space. This course will enable you to achieve consistent success in your projects by covering both the art and science of project management. There will be discussion of tools and techniques but also how to make sure you understand what success looks like in your stakeholder s eyes and how to lead the team to turn that vision into reality. LEARNING OUTCOMES Describe what a project is and how it is different than operational work Review the triple constraints Develop a project charter Organize project work using work break-down structures Create a project schedule Identify and manage critical paths Discuss pitfalls of not having the right level of rigor or proper scheduling tools Assess top down vs. bottom-up planning approaches Create a project cost estimate and define proper levels of cost breakdown and tracking Review components of a communication plan, how to formulate key messages, how to choose appropriate communication methods and how to ensure proper execution of your plan Identify key stakeholders and their interest in the project Utilize stakeholder analysis to manage expectations, resolve conflicts and gain stakeholder support for success of your project Identify, analyze and manage project risks Describe different types of risk response and when to use each Discuss the monitoring and control processes Establish proper tracking and status reporting Review the close out process and activities that take place in that phase WHO SHOULD ATTEND Managers or supervisor who oversee execution of projects Technical leads or engineers who have been given the responsibility of acting as a project manager Estimators responsible for or contributing to project cost estimates Schedulers responsible for or contributing to project schedule development Project managers who seek to improve their rate of success PAGE 2

4 INSTRUCTOR Hengameh Pourfakhr, MBA, PgMP Program Manager, Southern Company Hengameh Pourfakhr has over 20 years of project and program management experience in the Energy Utility industry, specializing in large, complex, high profile projects and programs. She is currently a program manager at Southern Company, the second largest gas and electric utility company in the U.S., working on divestiture of an operating company affiliate and several generating plants. Her list of past projects includes a multimillion dollar undertaking to upgrade telecom and networking infrastructure at transmission substations across the Southern Company s territory and a multi-year program to implement Cisco- based VOIP technology at over 600 locations, including power plants, local offices, and operating headquarters across 5 states. She has also led cyber security, insider threat, and information protection programs. Most recently, she managed a project to launch an energy innovation center to bring innovative products and services to customers and led a crowd source ideation project to improve employee safety. She also has experience in start-up of a project office and has a wealth of knowledge in best practices for establishing a project management center of excellence. Hengameh holds a bachelor s degree in electrical engineering from State University of New York at Stony Brook and an MBA from Georgia State University. She is a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and has earned her Program Management Certification from PMI. PAGE 4

5 REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION Participants must sign in/out each day and be in attendance for the entirety of the course to be eligible for continuing education credit. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS Case studies, PowerPoint presentations will be used in this course. IACET CREDITS EUCI has been accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). In obtaining this accreditation, EUCI has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard which is recognized internationally as a standard of good practice. As a result of their Authorized Provider status, EUCI is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard. EUCI is authorized by IACET to offer 1.1 CEUs for the course. Cancellations must be received on or before March 1, 2019 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $ processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date.
