3 AASHTO SUBCOMMITTEE ON ASSET MANAGEMENT Mission: Advance the State-of-the- Practice of Asset Management in State DOT s to optimize resources utilizing performance based goals and measures regarding operation, preservation, and improvement of transportation systems for member agencies.

4 AASHTO SUBCOMMITTEE ON ASSET MANAGEMENT Goal 1: Promote the development of asset management tools, analysis methods, and research topics. Goal 2: Communicate with and inform member States how to utilize asset management. Goal 3: Assist member States in assessing and implementing asset management principles.

5 AASHTO SUBCOMMITTEE ON ASSET MANAGEMENT Goal 4: Develop and document an understanding of asset management, how it is being used and how it can be used in the future by member States. Goal 5: Develop partnerships with public and private entities having an interest in and commitment to asset management.

7 Upcoming Activities: July Monterey, California Peer Exchange, Asset Management Subcommittee Meeting, and Joint Maintenance and Standing Committee on Environment, and Asset Management Meeting Peer exchange to share practices on issues associated with inventory, condition assessment, analysis of the inventory to determine life cycles, and capital programming decision making for asset classes other than pavements and bridges.

15 Asset Management Proposed Research Topics How to consider risk, what is the consequence of failure for critical infrastructure? Identifying and selecting criteria to optimize the allocation of resources across asset classes (within a mode) Development of deterioration curves for infrastructure assets other than pavement and bridges (initial focus on drainage infrastructure) Cost of delayed maintenance/preservation quantify how delaying maintenance could push projects into total reconstruction (focus on pavements and bridges) Risk of failure with retaining walls
