1 Hardware Announcement May 23, 2006 IBM System Storage N series adds Data Fabric Manager and Nearline Function Support Overview Data Fabric Manager (DFM) is designed to provide a central point of control and provide alerts, reports, and configuration tools. These tools are designed to help manage storage and content delivery infrastructure, consistent with business requirements, and help maximize availability and reduced total cost of ownership. The Nearline feature is designed to increase the number of concurrent backup streams available to an N series storage controller supporting OSSV as a backup tool. The storage expansion unit, EXN1000, now includes support of 500 GB SATA disk drives. Key prerequisites FC, NFS, CIFS, or iscsi protocol function is required on the host N series storage controllers. Planned availability date June 2, 2006 At a glance The IBM System Storage N series storage controllers support: Data Fabric Manager (DFM), providing additional licensed function. Nearline Function, allowing increased support for data streaming 500 GB SATA drives in the EXN1000 expansion unit For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: YE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. 2 Description All of the licensed functions necessary to support the Data Fabric Manager (DFM) are now supported for the N series storage controllers. DFM is designed to provide a central point of control and to provide alerts, reports, and configuration tools. These tools are designed to help manage storage and content delivery infrastructure, consistent with business requirements, and to help maximize availability and reduce total cost of ownership. The Nearline feature is designed to increase the number of concurrent backup streams available to an N series storage controller supporting OSSV as a backup tool. The N series storage controllers now support attachment of EXN1000 expansion units with configurations using 500 GB SATA disk drives. EXN1000 expansion units using 500 GB drives give N series systems maximum physical storage capacities determined by: N TB and 56 disk drives N disk drives N disk drives Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act The IBM System Storage N5200 is capable, as of June 2, 2006, when used in accordance with IBM s associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. 3 IBM United States Announcement Supplemental Information May 23, 2006 Feature descriptions Quad Port Copper Gig-E NIC (#1007): This feature provides an additional Gigabit Ethernet network interface with four ports. Licensed function indicators Nearline Function (#7230/#7281/#7430/#7481): This feature is designed to increase the number of concurrent backup streams available to an N series storage controller supporting OSSV as a backup tool. Host software Data Fabric Manager (DFM) Core (#8250): This feature is designed to provide a central point of control and to provide alerts, reports, and configuration tools. These tools are designed to help manage storage and content delivery infrastructure, consistent with business requirements, and help maximize availability and reduce total cost of ownership. DFM Core provides the license allowing the use of this feature on the storage controller for which it is ordered in support of some predefined number of nodes. On the initial order, the number of this feature ordered defines the number of nodes for which the feature is authorized. That number may be incremented via a subsequent (MES) order by ordering the incremental number of feature number That is, if the number of nodes to be supported is to be incremented by ten, the number of feature #8250 that must be ordered in the MES order is ten. For the initial order of this feature, a single key is provided, allowing DFM support of the number of nodes specified. When the number of nodes to be managed is incremented by a subsequent order, a new key is assigned allowing use of DFM for the new total number of nodes. The old key is rendered obsolete. DFM Bus. Continuance Option (#8252): This feature provides advanced function for DFM. It is designed to help you minimize downtime by notifying you that customized preset thresholds and conditions have exceeded operational limits. This feature requires the DFM Core feature (#8250). DFM Store Resource Mgmt Opt (#8253): This feature provides advanced function of DFM. It is designed to provide detailed storage utilization reports that aid capacity planning, consumption management, data migration, and chargeback. This feature requires the DFM Core feature (#8250).
