TELEDYNE CARIS CARIS ONBOARD Bringing Efficiency to Survey Operations TOYO Corporation Technical Seminar Theme: Introduction of Unmanned Platform Technology for Surveying Presented by: Matt Holland, Sales Manager Asia / Pacific, Teledyne CARIS

Content Force multiplication and autonomous platforms Autonomous platforms and data processing CARIS Onboard Process Automation Remote quality control Applications and examples Conclusions JAMSTEC AUV URASHIMA SEA KIT to be used by GEBCO NF Alumni Team for XPRIZE

Force Multiplication ASV Increased use of unmanned vehicles over the past 5 years; trend expected to continue for the next 5 years Surface and subsea vehicles configured with various sensors and payloads Greater number of vehicles and sensors are contributing to an increase of high resolution data Kongsberg Maritime New approaches are needed to keep pace with the volume of data Teledyne Oceanscience

Force Multiplication: Benefits and Challenges Benefits: Multiple vehicles and multiple sensors working together Provides an increased data rate Facilitates a reduction in overall survey time Challenges: Autonomous platforms lack human control in the feedback loop No quality checks between platofrms Overall result not know until the end of mission Data could be incorrectly acquired

Autonomous Platforms and Data Processing There are currently three main approaches to handling data from autonomous platforms. 1. Wait until the vehicle has completed the survey; then recover, download and process the dataset 2. Install a desktop application, and process through remote desktop (if communications are available) 3. Automate data processing on the platform using a web application based processing service

CARIS Onboard: Process Automation A web application based processing service is installed on each survey platform The surveyor designs a processing workflow before deployment, which is set to run on the sensor data as it is acquired Data processing is automated during the survey It also allows processed results to be viewed and remotely monitored through web map for QC Reference: Leveraging Near Real time Data Processing to Safely Increase Hydrographic Production; Kalman Czotter and David Dodd, Canadian Hydrographic Service, and Travis Hamilton, Teledyne CARIS Inc.; Proceedings of Canadian Hydrographic Conference 2016

CARIS Onboard: Process Designer Process Designer allows for full workflow customization Users can visually build the automated workflow Workflow steps and parameters are predefined for consistent results Multiple information products can be configured Process models are loaded to Onboard to automate repeatable processes

CARIS Onboard: Workflow

CARIS Onboard: Remote Quality Control Reduce risks and costs by remotely monitoring survey results via web interface Real time QC allows for problems to be identified and corrected during the survey Remote QC and visualization can be achieved with a low bandwidth connection 150Kbps to 1Mbps

CARIS Onboard: Remote Quality Control Real time and remote quality control provides a single point of access to monitor an entire fleet Allows platforms to be efficiently tasked Enables quality checks between vessels

CARIS Onboard: Applications Surveys Port and waterway surveys Hydrographic surveying Habitat mapping Subsea inspections UXO surveys Environmental monitoring Platforms Multi platform surveys Autonomous surveys Unmanned survey platforms Small survey launches Lean / reduced staffing Remote operations

CARIS Onboard Examples: AUV Operations CARIS Onboard trial with JAMSTEC and their deep sea AUV URASHIMA Traditionally it was several hours for a decision to transit or redeploy the AUV after recovery Automated bathymetry processing on the AUV during the trial allowed: Access to processed results immediately following AUV recovery Survey quality and coverage confirmed within 15 minutes Operational cost and time savings Minutes vs. hours

CARIS Onboard Examples: Autonomous Fleet Surveys ASV C Worker 5 RV Falcon Spirit Ocean Business 2017 demonstration Demos with ASV, Kongsberg Maritime and Teledyne RESON CARIS Onboard installed on two platforms Configured to automate the processing of both bathymetry and backscatter

CARIS Onboard Example: Autonomous Fleet Surveys During the survey a vertical offset was identified between the 2 datasets and corrected This demonstrated that data can be: Processed remotely from several platforms Made available in a single remote display for QC and decision making to correct errors and reduce costs

Conclusions The use of autonomous survey platforms is increasing, and this trend is expected to continue New approaches are needed to efficiently handle the high volume of data from the platforms CARIS Onboard brings efficiencies to survey operations and allows: Surveyors and operators to focus on collecting quality data Complex workflows to be simplified Processed data and products to be available during acquisition Real time and remote quality control to identify problems Quick product turn around
