1 Software Announcement August 23, 2005 IBM Operations Manager for z/vm R1 delivers scheduling and automation capabilities for z/vm systems Overview Operations Manager for z/vm helps improve the monitoring and management of z/vm virtual machines. By automating routine maintenance tasks and automatically responding to predictable situations that require intervention, Operations Manager allows z/vm system programmers and administrators to devote their time and focus on more critical tasks. Operations Manager for z/vm R1 delivers: Control and configuration commands Define rules to use when scanning messages on a virtual machine console Define actions to execute when a generated message matches a message in a rule Define timers to determine when or how often an action should be executed Make configuration changes dynamically, eliminating the need to stop and start to make a change Automated routine maintenance and responses Reduce computer operator errors by automating routine tasks with timers or scheduled events and actions Improve operations accuracy by automating the response to situations that normally require manual intervention Provide real-time notification to key personnel about problems with critical services or components Reduce administrator and user error by scripting a specific set of command/response pairs for routine tasks Access to a user s console Improve debugging capabilities with user problems by accessing and interacting with a user s console Support multiple administrators accessing the console simultaneously Operations Manager for z/vm helps you manage z/vm systems and virtual machines more effectively and efficiently through scheduling and automation. 2 Description Operations Manager for z/vm R1 supports automated monitoring and management of virtual machines to help you keep control of your z/vm system. Operations Manager for z/vm uses monitoring settings to examine the z/vm environment and address various concerns before they impact your Service Level Agreements. Automated monitoring of resources can help you maximize productivity and reduce costs by leveraging existing resources and freeing your IT experts to address the most critical problems. Operations Manager for z/vm helps to solve resource problems by automating system administration processes. This allows you to concentrate on your business objectives rather than dealing with daily administration tasks and predictable situations. By providing automatic monitoring of critical z/vm resources and unattended problem identification, Operations Manager can help you implement automated corrective actions. Automated z/vm management Administrators set up rules, actions, and timers to proactively manage z/vm resources. While Operations Manager manages z/vm resources automatically, administrators and computer operators are free to address other critical problems. Administrative features include: A set of commands that allow administrators to define automation tasks, define events that require automated responses, and interface with users consoles Ability for administrators to define when an action, composed of routine commands, should be executed, such as daily, monthly, yearly, or just once Support for administrators to define rules for determining which messages should be acted upon, and the associated action that should be executed Ability for multiple administrators to interact with a user s console simultaneously Support for task automation. By providing specific logic in the form of command/response pairs, administrators can use Operations Manager to logon to a userid, perform a set of routine tasks, and disconnect or logoff. This can help eliminate administrator errors caused by manually logging on and entering commands. It can also help administrators perform tasks at specific times or off-shift without requiring manual intervention. Automated responses assist operations personnel When a problem arises, the computer operator may not know how to interpret some messages that are sent to the console and may not know the commands that are required to solve the problem. Operations Manager for z/vm addresses these and other issues, providing support to operations personnel. Operational features include: Reduced operator errors by automating routine tasks with timers or scheduled actions. This eliminates the need to issue routine commands repeatedly and at a specified time. Improved operations accuracy by automating the reply to situations that normally require intervention. This eliminates the need for operators to correctly interpret messages, determine corrective actions, and correctly respond to the situation. Interaction with a variety of external methods, such as , pager, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) alerts, and other methods to notify key personnel about an event. This process ensures that personnel receive real-time notification about problems with critical services or components. Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act Operations Manager for z/vm R1 is capable as of August 26, 2005, when used in accordance with IBM s associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via IBM s Web site at product_accessibility/index.html Engine-based Value Unit pricing Engine-based Value Unit pricing for Operations Manager for z/vm is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price/performance. There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a higher price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (engines) on which Operations Manager has already been installed. Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product. IPLA and subscription and support considerations IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. The customer may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement. It is the customer s responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license. Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made. A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where Operations Manager for z/vm is running. These no-charge Subscription and Support registration records will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together. Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.
