Software can make predictions Data mining is a relatively new term, but the technology is not. Companies for a long time have used powerful computers to sift through volumes of data such as supermarket scanner data to produce market research reports. Continuous innovations in computer processing power, disk storage, and statistical software are dramatically increasing the accuracy and usefulness of analysis.

Data mining Data mining software: Number crunching and statistical functionality not normally found in programs like MS Access. Ability to analyse sub levels in data. Report writing functionality. Works with most database software. Task Find five different examples of where data mining tools provide a distinct benefit which would not have been available without data mining techniques.

Data mining Investigate Statistical ( and determine if there are any solutions from the following list that are applicable to your business: Banking Hedge Fund Applications Financial Risk Management Capital Equipment Mfg. Chemical / Petrochemical Consumer Product Goods Food Manufacturing Healthcare Insurance Marketing Pharmaceuticals Semiconductors Six Sigma

Data Warehousing Historical data can be deposited in a data warehousing application Data must be: Well organised Non volatile (cannot be deleted or edited) Data in the warehouse is then available to data mining software without interfering with day to day operations

Feedback Loops What happens in the organisation as a result of information from the MIS? Output should have some effect (direct or indirect) on future inputs. E.g. Data feed of actual sales -> stock control system- >reorder high-selling items to prevent out-of-stocks. E.g. 2. management examine sales report and maximise profits by increasing price on high volume items or offer promotion to boost sales on low-sellers.

Closed System Which report do you want to run? Reports are already defined user has little choice on format can choose from limited range of options. Often graphical output Aimed at management Limited flexibility Easy to use

Open System Here is the data... User can decide format and content of report Graphical and textual Greater flexibility Difficult to use, requires significant training Aimed at analysts

What is Data Mining? Questions What function does a Database have in the information process? What is the difference between a closed system and an open system?
