What they (PMI ) Say Project Management has evolved significantly since we published the PMBOK Guide Fifth Edition in Part 2 of the PMBOK Guide is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and must be updated every four to five years. PMI continually learns more about what drives successful project outcomes through our research and we want to share those drivers with the project management community. In my experience PMBOK versions are updated in each 4/5 years cycle PMP Exam blue print (role delineation study) revised in each 4/5 years cycle We are experiencing major changes in each 2 years PMP Exam handbook revised periodically with regular (minor) update Source:

Other additions include: Trends and emerging practices (My inputs: in each knowledge area) Tailoring considerations (My inputs: in each knowledge area) A greater emphasis on Strategic and Business Knowledge (My inputs: in chapter 1 and 2, develop project charter, Identify Stakeholder processes and Project Scope Management Knowledge area) A new section on the role of the project manager (My inputs: Chapter 3) Let s check their official messages Source:

17 Project Integration Management Changes A new process Manage Project Knowledge was added. Key output of the process is lessons learned register. Business documents are added as input to the Develop Project Charter and Close Project or Phase processes. Administrative closure activities for procurements have been absorbed into the Close Project or Phase process. Major Revision: Tools and Techniques are reorganized. New process Control Resources added (for physical resources) Acquire Project Team renamed as Acquire Resources The word project eliminated from Develop Team and Manage Team Major Revision: Full Knowledge area revised, ( and its not hard!!!) New buzzword/topic: Emotional intelligence (EI), Resource management methods (mostly shifted from Quality of PMBOK V5), Team Charter, Resource management plan (new subsidiary plan replacing human resource management plan in PMBOK V5), Hierarchical chart based on WBS and RBS (additional to OBS), Physical resource assignments (additional to team assignments), Communication technology (new tool in develop team)

23 Project Communication Management Changes Communication used for act of communicating (facilitating meeting, giving information, active listening etc) Communications indicates the artifacts of communication (memos, presentations, s) Control Communications process has been changed to Monitor Communications Major Revision: Successful communication discussed based on two parts, 5C of written communication discussed with related communication skills, effective communication artifacts discussed, Communication model (sender-receiver model) revised, form of communication included. New buzzword/topic: Hierarchical focus, 5C, Communication styles assessment, Communication competence etc

24 Project Risk Management Changes New process, Implement Risk Responses added (Execution Process Groups) New risk response escalate introduced both for Threat and Opportunities Control risk renamed as Monitor risk Major Revision: Non-event risk, project resilience (unknowable-unknowns) and integrated risk management added, new figure of RBS added, risk report as output added, assessment of other risk parameters (in addition to probability and impact, Qualitative Risk Analysis) added, simulation and sensitivity analysis revised with better figure and text (Quantitative Risk Analysis), new tools strategies for overall project risk and decision making added (Plan Risk Response), risk reassessment and variance and trend analysis deleted (Monitor Risk) New buzzword/topic: Variability risk, ambiguity risk, prompt lists, risk report, new parameters like dormancy, Manageability (total #9), hierarchical chart (like bubble chart) Representations of uncertainty (new tool at Perform Quantitative Risk Analysis), Escalate risk, burndown chart (like schedule management)

25 Project Procurement Management Changes Updated to reflect a more global perspective (shifted from north-american style) Completed deliverables and comparing them to contract absorbed into Control Procurements and administrative, communication, records was moved to Close Project or Phase and hence Close Procurement deleted. Major Revision: Some new procurement concept incorporated/discussed with project life cycle, procurement strategy, independent cost estimate added as new output, procurement documents replaced by bid documents, source selection analysis added as new tool (Plan Procurement Management), new table named as Comparison of Procurement Documentation added, Closed Procurements added as output in Control Procurement and related texts revised. New buzzword/topic: Building information model (BIM), delivery method (turnkey, DB, DBB, DBO, BOOT), terms of reference (TOR) etc.

26 Project Stakeholder Management Changes Stakeholder management renamed as stakeholder engagement Project manager rarely have the ability to control stakeholder, so it renamed as Monitor Stakeholder Engagement Major Revision: Tools and Techniques of all 4 (four) processes are widely revised and updated (not hard though!!!), Business case used as input in Identify Stakeholder process, inputs of other processes are also revised, content of stakeholder analysis tools changed. New buzzword/topic: Stakeholder cube, Direction of influence, Prioritization/ranking
