1 Smarter Data, Smarter World Conference Letting the data do the work Richard Hynes-Cooper Head of Innovation, Northern Gas Networks London, 8 th November, 2017

2 Who Northern Gas Networks are 1500 direct employees 500 colleagues employed through service providers 37,000km of pipe in our network 2.7million customers 415million annual revenues 2

3 Innovation - Letting the ball data do the work What are we taught as kids? Where a simple pass would open up the game and create a scoring chance, the player chooses to continue to run with the ball when a pass would have been the simpler choice When the right circumstance presents itself and players are in good spots to receive the open pass, make the pass! Let the ball do the work. No player is ever faster than a well-weighted pass The process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay. 14 People - Health and Safety Monitor It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees. (Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974) 14

15 Health and Safety Monitor Problem: HSE intervention for reporting on HAVS, no available real time automated system Proposed solution: Development of wearable technology to capture real time data relating to vibration and noise exposure Develop existing Thermalarm technology Objectives: The physical design of ActivePPE must not restrict the operator Positional referenceability is critical in making the sensor work effectively for consistent measurement. Data logging, communication, gathering, analysis and display of data will also be developed as part of the project. 15

19 Potential SAP HANA and DOR (Digital Operations Room) S4 HANA, BW/4 HANA, SuccessFactors, SAP Cloud Platform, SAP Analytics Cloud, Digital Operations Room, BPC, Concur and OpenText. The most exciting, and challenging, thing we have ever done: Not because of the tech, it's exciting because of what we're going to do with it. It's exciting because of the way it will enable us to evolve our business... by being in complete control of our data, by integrating Business Intelligence tools into an Enterprise Architecture that fully encompasses data and process. This is the rise of the Digital Utility, with Intelligence at the very core of its operation. 19

20 Potential SAP HANA and DOR (Digital Operations Room) Pipes People Potential This will benefit everyone. Increased efficiency for our customers and stakeholders. Integrity of data and improved visibility of our performance (in real-time) will be of massive benefit to Ofgem, HSE, Highways Authorities, Local Councils, etc. A simplified data model will mean a simplified data capture process, leaving field operatives free to concentrate on providing the best possible service to our customers. An optimized forecasting and predictive capability will allow us to maximize the effectiveness of resource deployment Predictive analytics will mean that we have the right resources, in the right place, at the right time.
