WHAT IS A DSS?

DSS: Decision Support Systems A Decision Support System (DSS) is a computer-based information system that supports decision-making activities. DSSs serve the management, operations, and planning levels of an operation and help people make decisions about problems that may be rapidly changing and not easily specified in advance. Examples: Risk prevention and emergency management in floods. Monitoring and management of marine dumping. Structural evaluation of buildings. Services network design in residential areas. Municipal energetic management.

Decision Making In general, we can say that a DSS is a computer system used to provide support, rather than automate the process of decision making

DSS Concept Supporting a decision means helping people working alone or in groups to gather intelligence, generate alternatives and make decisions.

DSS Concept "An information system based on an interactive computer, flexible and adaptable, specially developed to support the solution of a management problem not structured to improve decision-making. It uses data, provides a friendly interface and allows decision-making in the own analysis of the situation "

DSS Characteristics Dynamic, flexible and interactive reports, so that the user does not adhere to the predefined lists that were set at the time of implantation, and do not always respond to their real questions.

DSS Characteristics The database management system stores information from various sources, may come from data repositories of a traditional organization, from external sources (like the Internet), or staff (of ideas and experiences of individual users).

DSS Characteristics Data integration involves combining data residing in different sources and providing users with a unified view of these data. This process is very important in the development of DSS.

DSS Characteristics Fast response time. The underlying database is usually a huge data. Such databases are optimized for analyzing large volumes of information.

DSS Characteristics No technical knowledge required. A non-technical user can create new charts and reports and navigate between them by drag & drop or drill through. Therefore to examine the information available or create new metrics is not imperative to seek help in the computer science department.

DSS Characteristics Each user has adequate information to their profile. It is not that everyone has access to all the information, but you have access to the information you need to make your work as efficient as possible.

DSS Development The development of a DSS should use a very iterative approach. This will allow the application to be changed and redesigned at various intervals. The initial problem is used to design the system and then it is tested and reviewed to ensure that the desired result is achieved. DSSs are introduced after having implemented the transactional systems. The information generated provides support for middle management and senior management in decision-making. Systems are often interactive and user-friendly information with high standards of graphic and visual design, are directed to the end user

Types of DSS DSS specific Actual application that will be used by the user. This is the part of the application that allows making decisions in a particular problem. The user can act on this particular problem.

Types of DSS DSS generator This level contains hardware and software environment that allows people to easily develop specific DSS applications. This level makes use of CASE tools. It also includes special programming languages, function libraries and linked modules.

Types of DSS Historical DSS In these systems it is on the agenda compare current data with information from other historical periods of the company, in order to analyze trends, setting the evolution of business parameters... etc.

DSS TECHNOLOGIES

DSS: Decision Support Systems Decision Support Systems can be either fully computerized, human-powered or a combination of both and often include the integration of software technologies such as Sensor Networks, GIS, Data Mining, Numerical Analysis and Artificial Intelligence.

Sensor Networks Sensors work with each other to sense some physical phenomenon and then the information gathered is processed to get relevant results.

Wireless Sensor Networks Wireless Sensor Networks are networks that consists of sensors which are distributed in an ad hoc manner. Wireless sensor networks consists of protocols and algorithms with selforganizing capabilities. Introduction to Wireless Sensor Networks 20

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Map Viewers Georeferencing. Friendly style graphical interface. Integration with numerical and simulation programs. Advanced Cartography Coustomizable Interface Dinamic Layers Thematic Maps. Zoom, Pan and Information

Numerical Analysis

Artificial Inteligence Artificial Intelligence is the part of science that deals with the design of systems of intelligent computing, ie, systems that exhibit the characteristics we associate with intelligence in human behavior that refers to language comprehension, learning, reasoning, problem solving, among others. Neuronal Networks Smart Agents Data Mining Machine Learning Artificial Intelligence is a science that tries to create programs for machines that mimic human behavior and understanding.

Data Mining OLAP tools enable users to analyze multidimensional data interactively from multiple perspectives. OLAP consists of three basic analytical operations: consolidation (roll-up), drill-down, and slicing and dicing. Consolidation involves the aggregation of data that can be accumulated and computed in one or more dimensions.
