Stay Connected with Us The Challenge: Dealing with the Knowns and Unknowns By Jim Cantin, President, Leveraging Technology In Bob Woodward's 2002 book "Bush at War", there's a particularly confusing section that describes the thought process Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld used when meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Rumsfeld's objective was to efficiently draw out of the generals the most critical information. IT plays a similar role in companies, but the scope is dramatically changing. The following quote captures some of Rumsfeld's thinking: "There are Known Knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are Known Unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also Unknown Unknowns. These are things we don't know we don't know." - Donald Rumsfeld In the world of IT, there's a fourth combination to consider: Unknown Knowns. The Challenge: Dealing with the Knowns and Unknowns

"Facilitating both the Knowns and the Unknowns [in your data] is the future of information technology." - Jim Cantin Addressing the Unknown Knowns is similar to the challenges faced in Knowledge Management, where, for example, we know a document or certain information exists, but we can't find it. Then if we end up finding more than one version, we don't know which one to trust. Another example of Unknown Knowns is when some people in an organization have knowledge, but others who need it aren't aware that it exists. Today IT operates almost entirely in the world of What You Know. Projects and solutions are typically an effort to capture processes and new requirements and upon capturing that knowledge, build solutions. Facilitating both the Knowns and the Unknowns is the future of information technology. Technology is quickly bringing IT into the world of What You Don't Know. And with that change comes a new set of challenges and opportunities. Companies will need to develop new capabilities, many of which will occur in real-time. Examples include: detecting patterns in what seem like random events, predicting when an event is going to occur, optimizing a running business process, finding unimagined relationships and value in data by applying statistical algorithms to streaming data. But these real-time and predictive capabilities don't just happen. They assume that enterprise applications have been properly integrated; the foundation for future capabilities. Through the use of proven methodologies, and by seeding the organization with experience and skills, it is possible to get there. The graphic below overlays the key enabling architectures and provides examples of business capabilities that companies will need over time to successfully face the Unknowns in their data, and turn challenges into opportunities. Working with the lead professors at UB, one of the leading multiple sclerosis (MS) research centers in the world, Nate implemented an IBM Netezza platform to organize and process thousands of data variables, reducing the time required to conduct analysis from 27 hours to 11 minutes. The technology automatically consumes and analyzes the data, and makes the results available for further analysis.
