Personal Information Access Transit Traffic Communications Fixed Point-to-Fixed Point Communica Vehicle Roadway Systems ITS Architecture Engineering Overview For ITS Nathaniel Price ITS/Operations Engineer FHWA Resource Center Arianna Valle ITS/ Safety Engineer FHWA California Division
Agenda ITS Architecture Background What is a Regional ITS Architecture? Why is ITS Architecture Important? 1-2
ITS Architecture Final Rule On January 8, 2001, FHWA issued an ITS Architecture and Standards regulation and FTA issued a parallel Policy These two policies are virtually identical in content; separate policies needed because of the differences in the way that FHWA and FTA administer projects The intent of this rule/policy is to foster integration (and proper consideration of integration) of ITS systems being deployed in a region
Why Do You Need an ITS Architecture? Transportation Systems are Becoming More Complex More sophisticated systems More stakeholders to satisfy More interdependencies CONGESTION AHEAD
What is an ITS Architecture? Framework for Developing Integrated Transportation Systems Identifies: Organizations Systems operated Functions performed Communications Information exchanged 2-5
