The SAP BW technology that exists inside such an ERP system is called Embedded BW. The Embedded BW is used to support certain business processes in the SAP Business Suite and in SAP S/4HANA, e.g. integrated financial planning processes in SAP S/4HANA (aka BPC Optimized) Embedded BW is not recommended for building an Enterprise Data Warehouse, for several reasons considering multiple SAP Applications on SAP HANA in productive environments: Upgrades and patches Transact. Tables SAP DWH Data Resource allocation and capacity planning System Management, Workload Management, and Monitoring Backup & Recovery SAP does not recommend using Embedded BW for data warehouse (EDW) use cases! Best practice: The amount of data persisted in the Embedded BW should not exceed 20% of the overall data volume of the system. Embedded BW is not SAP BW/4HANA Lifecycle management High Availability & Disaster Recovery Security Production support systems ("Break fix systems") and Quality assurance system The version of BW used in the embedded scenario is BW 7.5 (BW on HANA) not on the innovation codeline and missing the improvements already delivered with BW/4HANA 2017 SAP SE or an SAP affiliate company.
