3 When the port asked Celcius Technologies to help develop and implement a data recovery solution, it was vital the IT provider delivered a reliable solution that would meet the customer s ongoing business needs. Sengupta comments, Our customer deals with hundreds of vessels a year, and relies on a number of IT applications to control access to sites, manage medical supplies at its onsite hospital and track cargo movements. The port needed a disaster management solution that would safeguard access to these systems and data. The solution had to not only enable a rapid response to disasters without disrupting users, but also offer cost-effectiveness and reliability. Solution Automated data protection from CA Technologies With customer satisfaction and future business at stake, Celcius Technologies turned to existing partner CA Technologies. Sengupta comments, We have employed a wide range of CA Technologies solutions since 2004 for security, storage, network and data management. They are easy to use, reliable and provide us and our customers with a certain level of confidence. The data protected by the solutions includes permits for all contractors, visitors and transporters. To meet the needs of the port, Celcius designed a data replication and backup solution based on CA ARCserve High Availability and CA ARCserve Backup. The CA Technologies solutions offered greater robustness and flexibility than similar products on the market as well as competitive pricing, comments Sengupta. The solutions were installed and customised in just three weeks, and are used across a range of the port s systems, including Oracle databases and Windows servers. 03

4 CA ARCserve High Availability enables the port to replicate around one terabyte of data from its servers in real-time. As Sengupta explains, The data protected by the CA Technologies solutions includes permits for all port contractors, visitors and transporters and information regarding patient treatments. It is stored on other servers at an alternative site on the port s complex. In the event of a problem with the primary database environment, the CA Technologies solution automatically detects that there is an issue and restarts the port s systems. If the problem remains, CA ARCserve High Availability then performs a failover to the secondary site with no need for manual intervention. All active users are immediately transferred, with no noticeable downtime. To add an extra layer of protection, both the port s original and replica datasets are backed up on a daily basis using CA ARCserve Backup. This process is also fully automated; for example the solution checks if the backup has been successful and, if any issues are identified, sends an alert to the port s IT team.
