esocket POS Integrated POS solution Knet 1
Summary Since 1994 when the first POS devise was deployed in the market, Knet had recognized the importance of this service and did take it up on it self to invest heavily in searching for solutions that will enhance the performance of the service, add value and meet the market requirements. K-Net wishes to procure a solution to EMV-enable the multi-lane merchants who are currently either non-emv compliant, or who are currently forced to use standalone POS devices to achieve EMV compliancy. Migrating such merchants to an integrated POS solution offers advantages both for the merchant in reconciliation and customer usability terms, and also for reduced hardware supply and maintenance costs. This proven solution is in use in banks and retailers around the world, reflecting global presence. Merchants with as few as 20 or as many as 30,000 POS terminals rely on Postilion for Retail day-in, day-out to handle their payment needs. 2
System Description The solution consists of an integration module located at each merchant cash register, known as esocket. POS. The module provides a simple front-end for the merchant to integrate with, in order to generate EFT transactions, it manages the driving of EMV compliant PIN pads and card readers, as well as ensuring transaction integrity and the security of cardholder data at the point of sale. Transactions generated by esocket. POS are sent to a central component known as Postilion Real-time, which translates between the message protocol used by esocket. POS (Postilion ISO 8583) and that used by K-Net s switching system Base 24. An additional central module esocket. POS Configuration Server is provided for ongoing configuration management and upgrades of esocket. POS at the merchant stores. The diagram above depicts a multi-lane retailer using esocket. POS on each electronic cash register with a single Postilion Real-time implementation at K- Net s data centre. 3
esocket. POS Advantages 1. Platform Independence Important for any acquirer considering the implementation of a standardized integrated POS solution throughout their merchant estate is the ability to run on as wide a range of platforms as possible. esocket. POS meets this requirement by being a Java based application, which is packaged to be platform independent. Any operating system capable of running a suitable Java Virtual Machine can run esocket. POS there are currently esocket. POS implementations live on the following platforms: Microsoft Windows (95, 98, NT v 4, 2000 & XP) Unix IBM 4690 OS 2. Online PIN processing The Postilion for Retail solution supports both online and offline (EMV) PIN processing capability. When esocket. POS is invoked to process a payment, it will determine if a PIN is required. PIN entry at the cash register requires a PIN entry device, which contains cryptographic keys used to encrypt the entered PIN. esocket. POS supports the use of encrypted PIN blocks upstream to the Postilion Real-time server. This implies that key management schemes are required; to ensure that encryption keys used to encrypt PINs are the same at both the PIN pad and Postilion Realtime. esocket. POS supports both DUKPT (derived unique key per transaction) and Master/Session key management schemes. 3. EMV processing The preferred mechanism for achieving EMV at the POS with esocket. POS is to interface to EMV Level 2 compliant chip card readers. This means that the card reader, as defined by the EMV transaction process, manages all interactions between the card and the card reader. Making use of a Level 2 compliant device rather than supporting a Level 1 compliant device is sensible in terms of network traffic between esocket. POS 4
and the device in a store server environment; and that all EMV interactions are managed where they should be on the device. esocket. POS caters for the complex key management requirements of EMV, including storing, managing, and potentially revoking public keys used for data authentication. 4. PCI DSS Compliance The theft of cardholder account data is a major concern for all participants in the payment industry. As a result, the major card associations developed a set of requirements the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) to govern the safekeeping of cardholder account information. MasterCard and Visa originally defined their own, separate data protection standards (Visa AIS, Visa CISP and MasterCard SDP). Whilst the data protection standard still exists under the scheme-specific names, these standards have now been aligned within the PCI standard. These requirements apply to all members, merchants, and service providers that store, process, or transmit cardholder data. Also, these security demands apply to all system components any network component, server, or application included in, or connected to, Arguably the most vulnerable point within the payment transaction environment is at the point of sale; typically integrated POS systems lie outside of the control of acquirers such as K-Net. As such these merchant owned and maintained systems, whilst processing and gathering account data, cannot be subject to the tight security and monitoring which the acquirer would impose in-house, and subsequently may represent a risk. The current release of esocket. POS (version 2.0) already addresses many of the PCI DSS cardholder account data protection requirements by ensuring that: Track 1 or 3 data is not stored in the database On completion of the transaction, track 2 data is permanently modified in the database such that the PAN is partially obscured and the entire discretionary is obscured CVV and CVV2 data is not stored in the database 5
With the release of esocket. POS version 2.1 in March 2006, S1 is pleased to present K-Net with an integrated POS EFT solution, which can be deployed in a PCI DSS-compliant manner. This version shall include support for asymmetric encryption of the PAN within the esocket. POS database using RSA publicprivate key security. 5. Value-Added Transactions In addition to handling standard EFT transactions for credit, debit and chargecard transactions, K-Net could choose to further leverage their investment in Postilion technology to provide enhanced services to their merchants. Such functionality would allow K-Net to enhance its market-leading merchant acquiring offering, demonstrating further innovation to new and existing clients in the region. 6
