6 Telemetry device types Hardwired Boxes OBD Plug & Play P&P Dongles Mobile Devices Pros Fixed hidden box less susceptible to tampering Suitable for vehicles that required constant online command and control Accesses to vehicle Canbus data including additional box features e.g. accelerometers / crash detection Options for additional bolt on options e.g. driver IDs Bespoke software can be developed / remote upgrades / changes made to polling data Suited to the Corporate / Mega Fleet market Easy to install (driver / dealer) / remove at any time (including during routine SMR). Suited to inlife fitting Can be adapted into visual in-vehicle driver aids Access to vehicle Canbus data including additional box features e.g. accelerometers / crash detection Bolt on options available e.g. driver IDs Customisable / bespoke software can be developed / box specs tweaked. Cons Can be very expensive for complex units Requires engineer install / de-install (or box crashed at end of life) Has previously caused some issues during SMR Perception of a difficult solution to buy into and hassle to set up Concerns around invalidating manufacturer warrantees Data ownership/protection issues when the vehicle is de-hired if the box is left in Easy to remove by drivers / SMR suppliers Lower resolution / remediation costs for tampering / damage A few vehicles may have restricted access to OBD ports and require technician support Concerns on invalidating manufacturer warrantees (less so that hard wired) Less barriers to swap suppliers by customers Limited / no vehicle Can data 12V supply, means very easy to pull out / conflicts with wider driver desire for 12v socket use Accuracy of some measured parameters below premium OBD units.
