8 Ontology An ontology is an artefact consisting of a: Vocabulary used to describe a particular view of some domain Set of explicit assumptions regarding the intended meaning of the vocabulary. Usually includes classification based information Constraints capturing background knowledge about the domain Thus, an ontology describes a formal specification of a certain domain: Shared understanding of a domain of interest Formal and machine manipulable model of a domain of interest

15 EPIM ReportingHub (ERH) Phase 1 Receive drilling and production reports from operators on the NCS, validate, store and send them to authorities and partners Provide drilling and production data to the partners on request Is flexible for changes in the reports and easy to extend to new types of reports Is based on NPD Fact Pages and PCA ISO ontology 15 15

18 Scope and Deliverables The Oil and Gas asset management operations and maintenance Interoperability - OGI TS specifies the use of a combination of ISO and industry standards to meet the interoperability requirements of the Oil and Gas industry and appropriate closely related industry groups such as the Petrochemical industry. 20 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) - Mandate The SIG shall ensure that the industry gets access to reference data of very high quality by contributing to: Making recommendation for further enhancement of reference data within its domain Quality assurance and formal approval of all changes and enhancement of the RDL within its domain according to ISO procedures, ISO Parts and PCA s rules and procedures Developing and maintaining ISO Establishing good dialogue arenas with all interested parties in the industry, in research and educational institutions and the authorities, and to clearly communicate the industry s position on key issues in this field (A few special SIG s with mandates beyond this.)

22 Summary Requirements for integration is growing rapidly Within organizations and between organizations Interoperability is still a major challenge in the Oil and Gas industry Between disciplines, organizations and life cycle phases Interoperability between standards is also a challenge Securing interoperability between existing standards might be better than creating new standards Semantic web technology is promising Performance and scalability are issues, but these are normally solved after some time The understanding and use of reference data/master data/ontologies are growing rapidly in the industry ISO is an ISO standard It is owned and managed by ISO PCA has developed an extended and improved ISO Reference Data Library(RDL)/ Ontology The goal is to have an ISO approved RDL with industry extensions Participation and co-operation is necessary in order to accelerate the work
